Smoker upgrade

Post by xrad »

Had a few bad smoker coils and no smoke. So took some apart. The newer smoke units have a brown or black base and are pretty quiet.

I had a few proportional boards and I wanted to make a proportional smoker. Easy to remove and resolder smoke coil and pump motor to new board. Also, I only use one set of drive motor wires to trigger the smoker (runs cooler)

To increase smoke output, undo four small black screws holding smoke coil to smoke box. CAREFULLY remove the smoke coil. Then undo two screws holding smoke pump to output shaft, and then twist and lift out the pump cylinder from the pump base.  Now you have the pump piston and cylinder apart.

Take a #11 hobby knife and slowly reem out the tiny output hole at end of cylinder JUST a little bit bigger (about 1mm diameter at most)

Then, take a pair of sharp scissors and cut off about 5mm of the dangling ends of the coil rope (the free ends, NOT the wire end)

Now clean out the smoke cylinder and box of any  plastic shards so that the pump does not get all messed up. Next, gently place the smoke coil in the box (be sure the rubber gasket is still in place) and gently tuck the smoke fluid reserve cotton ball and rope UNDER and somewhat behind the little plastic wall attached to the smoke box cover.

Cutting the rope ends allows you to position the cotton ball and rope further below and  behind allowing more smoke buildup in the chamber (it does not have to be jammed in there..you want the fluid to flow up the rope to the heating coil)

Put it all back together. I will post vid of smoker. I was really impressed by the output.. Probably mostly due to the hole enlargement. Be really careful when handling the heating coil. this is made really poorly and always about to fall apart.

I actually get smoke out of the aftermarket P III exhaust and really flows out of the JP exhausts.

Hi Xrad

thanks for posting. Do you have any pictures of the mod? A small video of the smoke exhaust would also be nice  ;D

cheers

This is probably as much smoke as you will get out of the unit. Make the pump hole too big and it sucks backwards, not good. Also, too big a hole and smoke is not concentrated enough, either. I only enlarged it a tiny bit and opened up the smoke box a little by rearranging the stuffing so that more coil is exposed.
