Why is there much more 1/35 scale stuff out there than 1/16?

Post by michaelwhittmann »

Do that many more people collect 1/35?

Am I just looking in the wrong places?

Any help would be appreciated.

The 1/35 scale has been the most popular in armor modeling for many decades. Many people build and collect them. It has the most models and accessories available. Kits for their motorization have also been available for some time. There are also ready-made sets with RC capabilities. On the forum, models in this scale have a separate section, as a bit of a curiosity. Our main scale is still 1/16.

What was the question?

Are 1/35 more popular? Well yes, but I can remember when I was a lad that most of the kits were 1/72, with only Tamiya being majorly into 1/35. Now that we have had an explosion of eastern European and Chinese manufacturers over the last 20 years or so, there is a lot more choice.
At the end of the day, a couple of 1/35 tanks can occupy a corner of a bookshelf, but a couple of 1/16's will take the entire shelf.

Are you looking in the wrong place? Probably not, there isn't much out there in comparison to the smaller scales. There has been a sudden glut of new kits and new manufacturers getting into the scale over the last few years, and my cynical brain tells me that perhaps they have figured out the demographic who have time and money to model can not only afford larger kits, but find the smaller scales harder to work with.
It certainly seems to be the case in the model railway world, between the eye watering cost of OO guage and the large amount of ready to run O guage now out there, that the manufacturers have decided who their target market is, and it isn't little Johnny looking to spend his pocket money who is going to be buying that stuff...

What were you hoping to find?

Specifically, I was looking for zimmerit for my Panther G.

Found lots of zim for Panther G 1/35 but not for 1/16. Hence, my inquiry.

I had to buy a full sheet that I'll cut up but that not ideal

BUT

I like the challenge.
