[Winter 23-24] Panzer III/Abt. 502

Post by Jimster »

Bought this used from eBay. I will turn it into a tank that’s crawling back to friendly lines after being almost totally destroyed by enemy fire on the outskirts of Leningrad. It will be its final mission.

As with all my tank builds (this is #3) I’ve completely replaced the factory electronics and motors. In this case I’m using a Beier HL-1 board and Forgebear sold me the awesome HL dual current gearbox. I have a GI Smoker to provide smoke for the battered hull.
Also visible is the upgraded, more appropriate drive sprockets. Image

Dual Current gear box. Is that a multi voltage thing or the one I've vaguely heard of that one motor drives it the other steers?

Yes, one motor steers and the other provides forward/reverse. And one ring to rule them all and in the darkness bind them. Pardon my Lord of the Rings reference.

It does sound like magic! So the super spin is eradicated with this power train? Some day I will have to learn how this voodoo works. Mike gave me one of the ancient Tamiya gear boxes with one motor and a servo that opened a clutch and applied brakes to either side for a turn. Some day I am going to use that on something...

Nothing is eradicated. All motor parameters are adjustable to achieve whatever driving characteristics you could want thanks to the Beier control board. I prefer the Elmod Fusion Pro board (like my Tiger has) but it’s no longer made. Such a shame!
