Hi
I purchased the SU-152 conversion from MK Modelbau along with the aluminium barrel for it a while back and have started looking at it as I got a KV1 hull and running gear from Dave Forgebear. The 152mm barrel is really nice but the SU-152 conversion needs a fair bit of work although it is not the worst conversion kit I have seen.
My question is, has anyone else used this kit and if so what did you do with regard to the barrel elevation? The reason I ask is the metal barrel is quite wide at the hull end and will be a pain to fit with elevation.
And info on this would be welcome.
Thanks

Re: MK Modelbau SU-152 build questions
That barrel is a beast. I have it installed on my Armoured Models SU-152 conversion. Luckily that kit has an elevation pivot and mount for servos built into it. I did end up making a sleeve for the barrel out of PVC pipe and adapted it to the Armoured Models kit so I could also have recoil. You can see the whole setup in this video:

Hi Tankme
THank you for that, it has given me a lot of ideas and I will think about how to adapt the MK kit to get the servo recoil, elevation and traverse working. The barrel is pretty awesome as you say, was really happy when I saw that bit in the parcel.
I also think the kit you have is a better one than I have but I know I will be able to get something decent out of it in the end.
cheers

Re: MK Modelbau SU-152 build questions
Well not sure about being better, just different problems. Mine warped in the Texas sun so I used some liquid resin as a backer inside the casemate to keep it from warping in the future. It seems it was 3D printed in PLA and until I started 3D printing, I had no idea how easy PLA warps in the sun. You have to be careful driving the SU-152 as the barrel is really close to the ground. I got a little over zealous driving down into a ditch and barrel stabbed mine into the ground breaking the elevation mounting ears clean off. I did glue them back on and the reinforced them with Miliput. The barrel took zero damage as it's thick and heavy. The entire build thread is here:

Artem also has a lot of good information here about Russian vehicles to include the SU-152.

Hi
Thanks for the further info and link to the other threads as they will be most useful.
I am used to stabbing barrels as my Tam Jagdpanther has had a few goes at that amd ruined more than one recoil unit. Will try to be more careful with the Su once built given it is even lower

Re: MK Modelbau SU-152 build questions
A few years ago I built one of the Juckenburg kits that MK-Modellbau are selling, there's a build thread here that covers the original resin kit and how it morphed over time. The metal barrel on mine had an extension that was a perfect fit for a Clark 3D printed Tiger I recoil setup.
I've also got one of those Armoured Models 3D printed kits, and to be perfectly honest I don't rate it very highly. It's not really any more accurate than the Juckenburg offering, the print quality is poor, the mechanical system is fragile and as Derek said the PLA warps. One day I'll get off my arse and finish my own one!

I made a lot of changes to the Armoured Models kit to improve it's details and some of the mechanicals...as Ram said it had a bunch of short comings.Raminator wrote: ↑Sat Jul 29, 2023 3:32 am I've also got one of those Armoured Models 3D printed kits, and to be perfectly honest I don't rate it very highly. Re: MK Modelbau SU-152 build questions
Hi
Thank you all for the advice, guidance and links to the build threads. I am getting a lot more eager to get started now after my initial thought on whether I had purchased the best kit. Just waiting for one more part to arrive from Dave at Forgebear and I am going to get started.
Thanks all
