Changing connectors on a battery

Would anyone know if its safe to change a Tamiya connector on a 4600mah battery to a JST connector?

I'd like to save space, and use JST's plus add a charging circuit, im just wondering if the JST connector is robust enough to charge the battery and handle the current.

Hey Rik,

There's lots of varying information/reports out there regarding the specifications of the JST connector - ranging from 2-12amp handling capacity.  Obviously, such a range at the low end of the spectrum is not useful information.  Most articles I've come across lead you to a maximum of 5 amp constant draw, but also say they have a high resistance, so...

Have you considered trying Dean's plugs?  From what I've read, they're hard to beat, performance wise.  I've got them installed on a couple of my tanks.  As far as size, they're smaller than the Tamiya connectors but a little larger than the JST connectors you were asking about. 

Get yourself some silicone wire, as well.  It's much more flexible, which will certainly give you more space to work with.

Thanks for the advice Bill. I'll try the Deans plugs. I've seen a few guys use them before.

What do you guys think about charging circuits? My battery has so many mods to it now, it is impossible to just take out and replace. I can charge it by removing the turret, but that just seems awkward. I did wire the DMD and MFU to one Tamiya connector to save space, and make life easier.

Deans plugs are what most use to replace the Tamiya plugs  on the charging connector to do or not to do is up to you ive heard of some tanks going up in smoke with built in charging jacks so you have the people who do it and then them that dont the only tamiya tank I find hard to change the battery in is the Pershing .

i convert all mine to deans plugs much better than the tammy style plug imho

can also use them as a charge plug for the tank
