Re: painting/weathering panzer Grey.

Re: painting/weathering panzer Grey.
These are the tactical markers, the first two are Grossdeutschland only, the other two examples are generic markers that were use thoughout the Army and SS Panzer divisions. The first two also are the markers that if a SS unit you would find on the front left hand side, opposite the MG.I tried to post another link but I am having some window error about ID,SOME CRAP,so as soon as I work it out I will post the link.Windows Vista is a learning curve for me. Also note these markers are white,so difficult to see,but as far as I can see that was the only color used. The last picture is inside the tank on the breech of the 88mm gun as inspiration to get home.SAX

Sax, with regards to the GD markings, I know you and Oz said you had never seen them on that divisions Tigers, I cant say I have either. I suppose if you want it to be historically accurate and you cant find any ref of them being used then you will leave them off. On the other hand if you really like that design, and are not bothered about 100% accuracy then put them on. whatever you do, its still an excellent job that you have done.

Re: painting/weathering panzer Grey.
Thanks guy's,I like the markers and if I can print them correctly I will add them, their are other tanks used by Grossdeutschland that have very detail markers, and all the SS divisions used them,So I believe I shall give it a try.I Hope to be up and running in the next day or two,and a friend who is a very skilled machinist and aluminum welder has my 1/6 SPROCKET well in hand and assures me me can repair and strengthen the sprockets,so my 1/6 scale will be starting to build.THANKS AGAIN FOR THE KIND WORDS,S-13 is my tank and I am well Pleased with how it's taking shape, which would not of been possible without your guidance OZ,or you support STEINER.Cheers for now Blake P.S.This thread has passed 2600 as of today, let's have another drink@3000.

Re: painting/weathering panzer Grey.
You know it seems that we may need to demonstrate some detail painting and weathering, wheels, tool boxes, cables, and in my case I stripped all the details off my TIGER-1 and painted separately, but mainly the wheels,do we change method if were detailing metal or plastic wheels? The rear tool box and jack I weathered separately,on the tool box I used pastels and pencil lead only,no paint,I did use several coat of polish at very low pressure so it did not run the pastels and sprayed outside, drying directly in sunlight. This allowed the polish to seal the color quickly, more pastel, more polish, then before the varnish I detailed the brackets and tray in grey pastel and the metal straps with pencil lead, the color is great and the transition area between wood and metal is very sharp,no overlapping of colors. On the wheels I used a cardboard box,I placed 16 toothpics in rows about 5-inches apart, one for each wheel,Now I painted the wheels in base color grey, low pressure, narrow tip feed, spinning the wheels as I applied the color, this had two effects.First nice coverage without overspray on the rubber part, and two no runs. Now I also did this in sunlight which caused everthing to dry quickly, three coats of paint, each one rather thin, then floor polish also thin and spinning the wheels, again no runs do to spinning. But remember thin coats, this also has the effect of leaving the center of the wheels a little darker which to me would seem more real as the edge of the wheel has more surface contact, grass dirt mud, water, etc.after the last coat of polish,I did three,I used pastel(black)around the center hub and lug nuts, applied rather hard blowing away excess, the spinning again with low pressure thin coats of polish to seal the color, looks like grease spinning around the hub, after three thin coats of polish, seal with varnish, light coats, also spinning and your done, the last coat of varnish was taken inside to dry.I did not take pictures of each stage,so I will repaint one wheel and take some pics, will post tonight,Sax

Re: painting/weathering panzer Grey.
OZ.I have another question. What about the painting of the steel drive and idler sprockets? Also how to prevent the paint from wearing off and contaminating the tracks? As I continue to reach my goal of completing this TIGER-I,another situation arises and the solution is not plan.Or would some kind of coloring with pigment, like track weathering be the right course of action? Re: painting/weathering panzer Grey.
hi sax.
best way to do the sprocket and idler are paint them as normal then just scrape off the paint from the areas which come in contact with the tracks.
cheers oz.

Re: painting/weathering panzer Grey.
Oz,the wheel detail is very defined in your picture,to achieve the effect on the bolt heads and inner hubs did you dry brush or pastels. Also same question about the sprockets as the bolt heads and outer ring seem darker and show the detail very well.My method does fine on the base coloring, but having problems with the details as listed above,Sax
