There are several things you can do.
That was my first wooden model, so It is not as good as I'd make it now, and I have learn't some things in the path.
First thing I would do now is to use a grinding disc or a steel brush, and brush the entire tower once built.
Then, I'd stain it with a mixture of what is called "Betún de judea" in Spanish, I have no idea of the name in English, but it is basically petrol and then add white spirt.
The more white spirit, the cleaner the color.
I found it is not worth to use those expensive hobby weathering products unless you are looking for an specific color.
