Question for the Tiger 1 Aces on here

Post by Rob59 »

Hello fellow Modelbuilders on here.
Right now, I am in the middle of an Initial Production Tiger 1 build.
And that's what my question is about.
On You Tube there are videos (part 1 & 2) about an already finished build from an Ini-Tiger 1.
In that video a Weld Seam in the middle of the upper hull, going from front to rear (or the other way, depending from which way you look at it :D) is mentioned.
Nowhere I can find any info about that Weld Seam, did it actualy exist on the very first few Tiger 1's which went to Leningrad?
I contacted the maker of the vid last night, asking if he had any info about it for me. So I do hope he will answer......
Last night I also checked several builds on You Tube about that Ini-Tiger 1, there are some but all in a smaller scale like 1/35 or so.
Not that the size matters, it's about that weld anyway.
The builds I've seen, all show that weld on the upper hull.....
Hopefully some guys on here can help me out on this?
Thanks in advance.
Grtz, Rob

Hell, I thought mine was spot on but now I’ve got to do more research about that weld seam.

Rob, David Byrden's article on the Tiger 1 hull/body construction certainly talks about different plates used in the build but at no time does he talk of a weld seam in the bodies construction.
I think I am about to upset someone :haha:

You are absolutely correct Rob’59! Actually mine is a bit of a fantasy tank as the tank with the horseshoe was captured by the Russians. My interpretation is the only (fictitious) other Tiger that also had side bins but no known photos exist of it. It fought throughout the war and all the way back to Berlin but too late to see much defensive action there. It was able to hide and harass the Russians until May 8th and it was then destroyed by its crew. No written documentation exists or was lost during the frantic last days of war.
Total fantasy but it’s my diversion from reality.

Sure.
That weld was mentioned in a build on YT, as I mentioned before.
Just wanted to know if someone on here could confirm that.
So why shouldn't it be serious?

In Australia they did a restauration on a Tiger 1 at a tank museum.
It is all to be seen on YT.
So I wrote them an email with the same question I did ask on here.
Was or was there not, a weld in the middle of the upper hull from front to rear?
Today I received an answer.
