Unlike Michael Wittmann Otto Carius was not a member of the SS he was a soldier in the German Army,
initially he enlisted as an infantryman before joining up for training in a Panzer regiment serving on the Eastern and Western fronts.
He was never accused, tried or convicted of any war crimes and opened and ran a chemists shop post war until his retirement.
He died at the age of 91 in West Germany.
Of course we should not forget Herman Bix
Not a New Zealander living and working in Australia but another member of the German Army who had an illustrious career in Heavy Tanks,
He served on most fronts that German Armour was to be found,
Awarded the knights cross amongst other medals he died aged 71 in West Germany.

Fair play Otto was the only guy who shot a plane in the sky because he got pissed off by it.

This is probably the most absurd thing we have heard, when a German tank shot down a Russian fighter, probably the most baffling event in the history of aviation and armor, leaving veterans baffled and mystified. Being shot down as a pilot is considered scary and horrendous, but by a tank? He would become the laughing stock of the Russian air force.

Otto Carius was a tank ace in the German army who was responsible for upwards of 150 tank kills. He was awarded with the Knight’s Cross of the Iron Cross with Oak Leaves for extreme battlefield bravery . This was the highest award given by the Nazis and was the highest military decoration awarded for valour.

Although perhaps not so strange when you consider the main gun on a Tiger 1 was pretty much unchanged from its original source the 88mm flak.

Just out of interest have any of you ever visited whittmans Grave? I did a couple of years ago and the cemetery is spotless but the strangest thing I noticed on this beautiful summers day there was not a sound, A huge place but not even a bird could be herd ,Even my wife noticed and thought it was odd.

I just returned from a trip to Normandy

our flat was in a vilage very near to La cambe, so our first visit was the german war cementery. Lots os birds singing, same in the US and UK cementeries

oh! and a side note, i was pleasantly surprised to find german graves in the british cementery in Bayeaux!
