This is what I use, and it does what it says on the box.

http://www.modelsport.co.uk/?CallFunction=ShowSpecification&ItemID=23075

Charges batteries quickly and safely. It has a Peak Charge detect, when the battery is fully charged it sounds a brief alarm and then switches to a trickle charge so that your battery doesn't fry. Easy to use, just plug it in to the wall, it beeps, connect the battery, set the charge rate (theory is that the lowest you can use is the best - it depends whether you are in a hurry or not), press the button, and walk away.

I tend to use 2amps whenever I can as a battery can get quite hot using 4 amps. That in itself isn't going to do the battery any harm, but using a hot battery doesn't do it any good, so you have to wait for it to cool down. Using 2 amps it doesn't get very hot at all, so it cools down a lot quicker...though it will take longer to charge.

I have also drained a battery down to cycle it through a charge/discharge cycle, by disconnecting the wall socket and plugging the battery in, the battery is then powering the internal fan and slowly drains down.

Hope this helps, there are plenty of choices out there, though as you already know there is a wide difference in prices.

Cheers
