Iraq, Challenger 2

Post by FireflyKeith »

I watched Mean Machines Of War this morning on channel 5 and they told the story of the Challenger 2 tank in Iraq when it was caught out by some Iraq troops at night, they managed to take out all the periscope slots and windows so the crew were blind, which led to the driver putting it in a ditch and throwing both tracks, they then came under heavy machine gun fire, got hit by 8 RPG rounds and 1 anti tank round none of which penetrated the armour, the driver they were interviewing said the RPG rounds just sounded like a dull fudd, eventually they were rescued by other Challengers, but you just cant imagine what they must of gone through inside that tank, sitting duck comes to mind.

The driver did say if all the modern armour was lined up and he had to pick one , it would be the Chally 2 everytime.

the chally 2 is the only new MBT out there the abrams is a Knock off of the Leo 1 and well the rest arent even in the same category (IMHO) ;) ;D ;D

a lot of brit tanks dont get much good press probably because movies werent made using them with actors as heros LOL

the only film i have ever seen where they use a chieftan is the film about the dragons taking over london (Cant remember the name LOL)

Saw that episode a while ago.
Wonder what an american crew would have done in the same situation?

Cheers
