Model Making - Attention To Detail

Post by Estnische »

I came across this video of car model making through slot cars - Niemas Racecars are at the top of the tree. I thought you may be interested in the ways in which Michael Niemas goes about top quality model making. I especially like the filtered work bench and paint booth - not necessary for RC tanks, but the attention to detail principles can be applied.

There is no reason you can not have accurately detail models that are functional! :D

Okay, but this is what many of us do to our models, either ones that start as RTR or static model kits in need of huge mods to make everything work and look realistic.

The guy gets my vote on what he's doing as a model maker....but....having raced 1/24 slot cars in my youth for many years l know for a fact that a plastic shell like that, let alone the detail and shelf queen finish, wouldn't last a minute. Neither would it handle well. But that's the way the hobby has tended to develope. Retail RTR slot cars are basically cheap, low powered toys and the current 1/32 UK national championship which shared one of their rounds with an event l was running (RC based) at Silverstone more recently was a sad reflection of the advanced design cutting edge development that we were using in 1/24 back in the late '60s. It appears to have lost its performance focus for show. Great models but l'd remove the motors and put them on a shelf where they'd last a while!

Sorry, l know l sound negative but l feel the same (opposite) way about model RC ship battles. Watch a battle on YouTube. More like racing!!!

IMHO, racing based hobbies like these should compromise on accuracy and detail and focus on performance, not both. That's one of the great things about RC tanks. You can build to an exceptionally high standard but still make them perform their non racing functions realistically without damage. However, attend any meeting to find members who would prefer to race them!!

Groan over. Sorry again. :/
