Clear coat

Post by jonh »

Hello All
Can anyone recommend an acrylic clear coat that does not 'bloom'? - Just had a bad experience with Tamiya stuff.
Many thanks for any advice.
Cheers

What finish? Matt, satin, glossy?

I would have recommended Tamiya! What were you using and exactly what paint finish was it being sprayed on to? A photo might help us. It sounds as though there's been a reaction between the paints.

Maybe it was too much humidity in the air. In case of matt finish I have the best experience with Tamiya.

Thank you for the replies gentlemen.
I used Tamiya semi gloss sprayed over mission models Russian green acrylic. I left the mission models paint for over a week before applying the Tamiya semi gloss with an airbrush.

I think I am going to do some test pieces of plasticard and see what the result is (I guess if my brain had been in any sort of good order I should have done this before spraying the model!).
One test piece with Tamiya primer then Mission models green and then Tamiya semi-gloss.
The other with Tamiya primer, Tamiya dark green and then Tamiya semi-gloss.
It will take a few days as I like to leave some time between successive layers or paint. I have used Tamiya matt clearcoat in the past without problems but only in conjunction with Tamiya matt acrylic paint.

I have had some very disappointing results with applying clear coats on plastic finishes and after asking around I drew the conclusion that the temperature of the workshop and the humidity had a massive effect on the finish.
The Paint should be thinned and stirred properly, If you are using an Air Brush make sure the air supply is regular with a water filter and of a decent pressure,
The air in the workshop should be dry and the temperature should be warm NOT HOT for the best results and obviously free of dust.
I think I am about to upset someone :haha:

Good Morning, Jonh,
I use Model Masters Enamel Dull Coat on my tanks which are all painted with enamels. ( The times are changing tho' and soon everything will be Acrylic 'Safe' paints ) When ( rarely ) needed, I used the Model Masters rattlecan Dull Coat for Acrylic and it works very well too. I have very low humidity here in Colorado and too much is probably the issue over there as others have noted. I know you will get it figured out. ;o)
regards,
Painless
