Hello from Utah

Post by oldowl1953 »

I'm oldlowl and I enjoy RC tanks. I currently have seven, all H/L but I'm looking to go with a little higher end next time I buy. We have IR tank battles with family members and my son in law has bought a couple of 1/16 tanks as well. I look forward to learning a lot from all the experienced member tankers.

A very warm Welcome
The much raised standards of the latest Heng Long 1/16th Armour makes them much more upmarket then ever before,
They just need to pay a bit more attention to quality control,And while most of us still aspire toward Tamiyas offerings they seem to have noticed the competition and are leaving the field,
I feel sure we can answer some of your questions but I hope we can rely on you to help us with some answers. Please join in on anything that attracts your attention.
I think I am about to upset someone :haha:

Welcome from Illinois! You live in a beautiful state and my wife and I plan to drive our Jeep back out that way this fall.
You’re really going to enjoy this tank forum and it’s definitely my go to resource.

Welcome aboard from the Motor City, it's always good to see another Yank join up. 8)

Tell us more about your IR battles? Are you using the stock heng long battle system, or taigen, or maybe the new 6.0 from heng long?

You say you're looking into higher end tanks, any particular model? I ask because I'm kind of having a sale right now and I might have something you'd be interested in. Brizo58 has a great sale going right now with some great tanks at good prices but by the time you add shipping to the U.S. it's not such a deal after all, especially since tanks tend to suffer more damage on the ocean. Even packing them in those huge containers they still have a fair amount of broken tanks by the time they get here. But from Detroit to Utah ain't bad and stuff usually arrives in good shape (I'm very conscientious about packing) so let me know if you're looking for something in particular.

Again, welcome to the Dark Side of RC, you're gonna love it here. 8) :haha: ;)

Thank you for such a warm welcome!! All my tanks except the Stug are 6.0. We have using just the stock H/L "apple" but we are have having a 'blast' battling each other. We have had as many as 5 family member from 4ys to 67 having a great time. We have only been using IR and we haven't use the BB's because of the little ones. I feel the IR is awesome and we decided that is the way to go. NO BB's!! We do have FPV on three and battling with the headsets is very realistic. We have set up a website called grandpasrcgarage.com and we will be posting pics and such now and then so please take a look once and awhile.

I had a quick peek at your website to be, and it looks very promising. Having 5 family members enjoying an IR battle sounds just about idyllic ( I guess you could call it "Gunfight at the OldOwl Corral" :D ).
My kids and grandchildren live in other countries, and so I envy you the wee closely-knit combat! Great stuff. :D
Now, if I could teach my three West Highland Terriers (one sadly, very ill) to operate joysticks, instead of catching balls (or biting barrels >:< ), I'd be the soul of contentment :D

Out of curiosity, what attracted you to RC tanking? Many find their way here from RC planes, cars and crawlers, etc.. Others seem to fall into the hobby by pure chance, or age-induced 'repatriation' to childhood interest- or, maybe, because of a past military background. Often, there's a big nostalgia element in it. :)

I have always loved the engineering aspects of WWII warplanes. Just the idea of piloting such a power monster has been a fantasy of mine. Not the tech jets, but the old fire breathing fighters like a P-47 or FW190. I did get a private pilots license several hrs ago and enjoy that very much. That said I started collecting 21st Century 1/18 models of warbirds which they stopped making nearly 20 yrs ago. I also found 1/18 tanks of the same era and collected several of those. My most prized acquisition is a 21st Century Panzer RC. I think back then it was the only model they motorized. That led to discovering 1/16 rc tanks and he I am, Hooked on these great little beasts that my grandsons and I have epic battles until the batteries fad. We have FPV cameras and headsets and that makes are scrimmages even more exciting.

I am going posts pics of my static models as well as the rc tanks and possibly videos of battles on my website as soon as I get a little more educated on the ins and outs on making it work.I
