affixing photo etch parts

Post by paulc »

Hi all I've just got a voyager photo etch set for my Tamiya panther and was wondering what you folks use to affix them. The reason I ask is in the past I was fitting photo etch to my king tiger and due to moving ended in the loft for a couple of years. When i got it out to continue work on it some of the parts had come off. or broke off easily I know I used a super glue to affix them but cant remember what type. I want a good fix as my tanks will not be shelf queens and will be using them to battle. But I do like the detail and don't want to be loosing bits.
Tamiya tanks X2 Shermans, JS2, KV1,KV2, Pershing, x2 Tiger, King tiger, Panther, Jagdpanther, Panzer IV, Jagdpanzer.

For a permanent join that (After a little practice) looks good I recommend a Butane torch and Fryolux Paint, There are a number of different torches on the market ,Dremel make one and it comes with a broad choice of tips,
Don't be put off by it being called a Torch, It is actually a better version of a Soldering Iron,
Be careful using Fryolux it is very toxic, The temptation to lick the tip of your paint brush as you paint what is to all intents liquid solder along the seams of the Photo-Etch before wiping the seam with the tip of the torch should be avoided :lolno:
I think I am about to upset someone :haha:

I have used small dabs of 2-part epoxy in the past for secure fixing. So far, so good. The PE grills on my Jagdpanther were fixed with Loctite gel. I find it's a very strong bond, but has a little flexibility in it- more than the typical superglues, that is. May superglues will make a strong bond, but can be brittle where vibration is present.
Lately, though, I used JB Weld (metal) two-part epoxy to bond alloy suspension parts together on my Comet A 34 project, as well as to bond disparate material (e.g. metal to Styrene, and ABS, and brass to alloy etc.,). The bonds have proved to be incredibly strong, and should resist vibration very well. PE to plastic (ABS or Styrene) should therefore a good match
