Harder act to follow...

Post by 43rdRecceReg »

It's been wet and windy up here in the Highlands in the last week or so, but when (fingers crossed) I'm in receipt of a few days of unbroken sunshine from the Weather Deities, and calm conditions, I'm going to do some tank daubing.
Up until now, the weakest link in my airbrush setup has been the airbrush itself. I have two airbrushes, but they're Chinese, and anything but smooth and consistent in operation.
So...... having upgraded my compressor a couple of years ago, it made sense to get an airbrush made by a firm with a decent reputation. Thus, the one I opted for is an entry-level (but hardly cheap) model from Harder and Steenbeck: the H & S Ultra. The big selling point for me, though, is that the kit comes with two nozzles: 0.2mm and 0.44mm. This means it can go from fine detail, to a broad sweep, with a quick change of nozzle. Up until now, I've often used Tamiya rattle coats for priming and undercoating whole tanks. Hopefully, the .4mm jet will give the overall coverage I need, without recourse to rattle cans.

Anyone who has some experience of using the H & S Ultra, is welcome to add their hints and tips here. Woes too, but I'm hoping that isn't the case. :lolno: :D

I do use rattle cans for the undercoat but I would never pay Tamiya prices when a Simoniz can of red oxide at twice the size and half the price can do as good a job,
The only difference to the application is the use of an aftermarket nozzle, (A Dozen with different size and shape jets from E-Bay for pennies)
I think I am about to upset someone :haha:

I look forward to your experience here Roy, I've been eyeing one of these up for a while. I'm similarly afflicted with cheap Chinese airbrushes although to be fair they've done a decent job but it feels like I'm often fighting them rather than them working with me!

I have this kit about half year now. Before I had only cheap chinese crap. I was like changing from Trabant to Mercedes :)

Tip: buy lid for cup (sold separately).

Congratulation to your H&S Ultra.
This was my first Airbrush, now i use the H&S Evolution 2in1.
The main difference between ultra and evolution is the ink quantity regulation.
This is helpful if you are not that experienced with airbrushes - like me - and that was the reason to switch to evolution.
And the evolution have a screwed color cup with larger internal diameter, it is easier to clean.
In paint application or spray pattern is no difference.
With the 0.4 nozzle you theoretically can spray colors almost undiluted, but i use two/tree drops of flow improver.

Thanks for the input, lads! It looks as if I've made the right choice. I'll certainly follow up on the tip of buying a cap for the cup.

A comparision between the H&S Infinity CR and the Revel Pro airbrush . Build quality H&S massive win, seals better quality on H&S, Revel pro coating wearing thro ,H&S has engineering chrome for long life and needle is chrome plated as well, spares Revell Pro limited parts H&S every part available. Last but most important cleaning the H&S is easier and safer as seals are solvent safe. Money well spent
