These engines first saw military service in Fokker airplanes..

Most tank engines from this period where aeroplane engines as they gave greater torque and where lighter than a normal engine, even the Cromwell and Sherman used aeroplane engines

i think i may be right to say the me-109 engine was developed in a merc raceing car in the mid 1930 as engins for war planes were band under the versailles treaty ?
