My question is would an over the counter 1/10 scale remote winch controller simply be a plug and play with a 1/16 or would there be a need to make modifications ?

It has taken far too long but you can now buy 1/16 scale Winches from the likes of "Banggood" et al
There has long been remote controllers for 1/10 Scale winches,

Re: Remote winch controls.
Check for them in aliexpress, many times is cheaper there.
There are two versions, ones that come with an extra remote controller and those who are plug and play with your radio receiver.
If you have spare free channels Id get the plug and play one without a shade of doubt.
Plan C is to get one of the ones that come with the remote and fit your own cheap ESC to it for being able to control it with your radio.

Re: Remote winch controls.
Thanks Rad, I am not too bothered about using a dedicated remote or using a plug and play to my Radio that decision comes later, my first main concern was the compatibility between a controller built for a 1/10 Winch and its ability to operate unmodified a 1/16 Winch,
But it would appear from your remarks that there would not be a problem for which I say Thank you
