Welcome aboard from the Motor City. Great introductory post. You already show potential. 8)

I started with the exact same two tanks in 2013, but back then it was still 27 mhz and both were defective and had to be sent back, so you're already a step ahead of me.

This is a great hobby and an extraordinary forum so I think you'll do well here and have loads of fun. In this shot you can see my Bulldog as she appears at present, and I still have the stock hull top and turret if I want to go back to being conventional. I also have a complete set of metal suspension, upgraded springs, and metal roadwheels and return rollers for her. I just need to find the time (more accurately, I need to win the battle against laziness). @)

And some action

She's got a clark TK-20 and the engine sounds on that board are pretty cool, IMHO. Start up is great. 8)

Since I'm on the other side off the puddle I won't be much help unless it's small stuff, but I do have loads of spare Bulldog parts if you ever need help.

Welcome to the Dark Side of RC, you're gonna love it. 8)

Oh yeah, you can call me Max or Gary, and if it's OK I'll call ya Steve. I'll be looking forward to photos of your new tanks.

Mr. Knight, I understand about the rivet-counters, and a thick skin is very helpful in this hobby, but I don't think I'd want to lose them all together. Most rivet counters are an excellent source of info, and I really believe they're largely responsible for some of the improvements, like the lowering of that last return roller on the Imex/Taigen Panzer IV. Now if we can just get them to properly slope that rear deck! 8)

But for Steve, remember that at the end of the day it's your tank and if you're happy that's all that counts. The important thing is to have fun with it.

Hi Steve and welcome to a top forum and hobby. Interested to hear you live in Chatham, Kent, where many years ago they built a new college on Fort Pitt Hill. It was Medway College of Design and l was a student for the first four years when it opened. It's now part of Kent Uni. I found lots of new things there and lost one or two as well....fond memories!

They focused a lot on model making for design prototyping purposes - no CAD or 3D printing then. I swore of ld move from South London and live in Kent but many years later l was drawn to Essex. Oh well, best laid plans.

Sorry, wandering a bit BUT if the college still runs evening classes you may be able to access their machine shops? Worth a check.

So I have been looking and looking for a while at getting into RC tanks. I love the idea of improving and developing models over time and Long term I want to create an RC Bridgelayer but I know that is a long way off.
My day job is military simulation/tactics and a bit of 3D design

Via the magical eBay I have now got myself not one but two tanks both Heng long
Tiger 1 and a Bulldog. Both need a bit of work but that’s why I brought them.

I am currently adopting the approach of sponge , avid reader of posts and forum browser. Not burning questions just yet but I can already see this is a good place to post and get good help if needed.

Over the next few days I aim to sort my profile out etc

Be gentle with me on the RC tank front but I am an ex squaddie so I have a thick skin.

Aye aye Steve - Man of Kent or Kentish Man ??? :D

Welcome to the wonderful world of RC tanks - be careful as it can be like entering a wormhole, especially with German WWII armour as you always run the risk of running foul of the rivet-counters :haha: :haha:

I'm in Sittingbourne (not a native of Kent but made it my home!) . What era Military simulation do you do? Former Bootnevk here so stand by for banter !!! 8) :D
I think I can dirty myself by replying to a boot neck.

I am a man of kent

I work for the military delivering Combat simulation and training so it is current. We mainly use VBS3 as a simulation engine

Happy to disappear down a rabbit hole with the hobby
Good morning Mr Stevens and the windy notchy knight.

Well they have arrived.
The tiger is an early model. All basic Seems ok (haven’t run them yet as I am charging the battery)
The bulldog has metal track etc but needs a lot of love small details damaged etc. I have on rc controller that won’t work as it is obviously broke ( May be repairable. On inspection)

One of the batteries are broken. Lead has come of the + side
Will post pictures when I work out how to lol

Wow, those are the old FM systems. I would immediately junk those and get something better, even if it's just a 2.4 from taigen.

Don't rush anything! They are old radio systems but if they work you can get to know what you have first, just don't invest any more money in the 27mhz radio stuff you have.

You could swap out the a system for a late model Taigen or HengLong system. You could alternately buy a single FlySky FS-i6 2.4G 6CH AFHDS RC Radio Transmitter With FS-iA6 Receiver and then buy two multi function units, either Taigen or an independent ones. The Skyfly radio gear is around £35 from Banggood, great value.

There is a lot to learn so take your time ;)

One is definitely broken. At the moment I am getting flashing light on the tanks but they don’t start when I press the engine on button one the working one.
Battery is charged and controller batteries are good
