Post by sherman »

well i'd like to say hi to you all. im Andy and been in the back ground for a while and now have joined with many many ideas and questions hoping that in time they could be answered. i have been doing rc for 14yrs and always had a itch for a tank. so i just brought a tamiya sherman from the early 80's just wot i wanted.
all i ask im a total virgin to tanks but do want to do 2 things. any tips or links would be help full. i'd like to extend the barrel to the UK i think 75mm. and the 2nd i'd like to make the turret/barrel move only. i think you can use a donner heng long. any how thats all from me  ;D

Hi Andy,

There's a few tankers down your way who can help, but I should warn you that the earlier tamiya shermans need some work to bring them up to spec. The turret traverse and elevation mechanisims are widely available for HL's but the turret ring gears are somewhat more rare.

That said, there are a lot of guys here who are more familiar with Tamiya's parts catalogue than I am, I'm sure that they can help you ;D

Welcome aboard!

hi there,

welcome aboard, great to have you hear!

Many people have converted the old 80's shermans into newer ones with Smoke and sound (S+S) with, as you say, donor HL electronics.

Here is Pete (971wright) converting his 80's sherman into a Firefly with HL electroncs...

cheers, have a great time here! :D

Hi and welcome to the tanking hobby. I've not done a sherman myself yet, bu you should be able to use HL parts for elevation and turret traverse. Does your 80's Sherman have a DMD?

You'll find loads of advice here, this forum has been infinitely helpful to me, and I dont think my Tiger will come out anywhere near as good, if I hadn't had these guys advice.

Cheers,
Rik

hi there,

i know im not rik but im hear first lol :D

Tamiya electronics have changed alot, the older 80's version like yours if im right is the double clutch version, it has a single gearbox taking power to each drive sprocket, but clutches that do the turning  :D anyway the DMD is like the brain, except the older versions such as yours will have a DMD T-01 or 02 i think. The newer tamiya's have sound systems and are generally alot more technically advanced, and you get the newer DMD and a MF (MULTI FUNCTION) unit, which doesn all the extra bits like lighting and recoil ect.. These DMD and MF units (including the older ones) and boards, electroical ones, concealed within a black box that will be hidden somewhere in the tank, probably under a jumble of wires if its anything like my Tamiya jagdpanther :D the boxes are fairly big however.

cheers, hope this helps... and makes sense :D
