Whats the best way to replicate a cast surface on gun mantlets etc?

Mr Surfacer 500 can work really well. You stipple it on with a brush, let it dry, then sand it lightly. It gives a good appearance. Annoyingly though its hard to get hold of.

Yep, Rik is right. Get yourself some Mr. Surfacer 500.
i ordered mine from a Hong Kong based Ebay seller and it was here in 3 days.

for a gun mantle

i use squadron signal .. green stuff filler and mi with humbrol liquid poly .. so its like a muddy goo .and stipple on  with a brush

much simpler .. and easyier to get hold of

For my Pershing I used a very stiff bristle brush with the end taped up to make the bristles stay even more in place. I then got some acetone from the chemists and used the brush to stipple it on the cast area of the tank.
Cheap, cheerful and effective.

Hi guys, again I would go with Mr Surfacer and have never had any problem obtaining supplies when visiting model shows. I got my last lot from MDC (Model Design Construction). The guys are friendly to deal with and based in Derbyshire. I beleive you can drop in if you don't visit shows and do mail order, link posted below - I hope!
