I'd love to participate in the kind of battles that I used to be part of when I was a member of the Detroit club, but having come home and tried to get the same kind thing going on here in another club, I just realised it was impossible - One one side was childlishly shouting me down for 'dictating to people how they should have fun', and the other side took an overly agressive mentality to the game that would be considered blatant cheating in the US club environment - over powered emitters, dodgy sensor placements, no forward facing sensors "because mah tank has impervious frontal armour!!!111!" etc...

I just gave up and walked away

My participation in the Grantham club is more social than anything else. A great and varied bunch of folks who do as much or as little as we can be bothered to. If enough of us wanted to do something organised I'd be happy to lead it, but until then enjoy our company 8)
Sounds a very nice club, I will pop by, however on the 4th August I'm on holiday, so will be around September time.

Is there no framework rules for IR battles? I would expect that members would like to practice and develop their battle skills in a structured way.

I'd expect all participating tanks to go through a scrutinering process to ensure your tank complies, then whatever the agreed protocol for battling with a impartial judge(s) to observe proceedings.

This would in no way spoil the fun - the added structure would enhance it! A good social occasion is obviously great for the hobby - l look forward to joining in - but lR battle tanks need to be exercised in a challenging way, don't they?? I'd welcome your feedback.

Sure do miss this action. Here where I am in China, I can't get anyone interested in IR meets - all they want to do is show off their builds followed by parading their tanks around some idiotic obstacle course.

We have always worked to tamiya standard. Take hits from all sides, hit indicator lights, tamiya weight classes, and most importantly ir emitter in a 6mm tube with tip of LED recessed 9mm into the tube.

At the old club we used to have organised battles, allies Vs axis, 3v3, 4v4 or however many we had on the day. The Americans are really organised and I think that's something I'd enjoy even if it's not for everyone one.

Driving around shooting each other in a none competitive way is nice and relaxing. Often just as enjoyable.

This debate has raged since time immemorial, lol. Yes it would be great to have organised tank battles, even an annual national event somewhere central where all of the clubs turn up with their scenery and we create a large battlefield...but getting people who are both available and willing to travel is a huge challenge.

I used to love going to the military shows, where we had realistic outdoor battlefields. That way unarmed tanks and IR spec'd ones could play to their hearts content. It was a great way to spend a weekend.

Getting people to travel is just about good advertising and making their trip worth while. In the not too distant past I've organise National competitions every month of the year, annual Euro Championships and then annual World Championships.

These were advertised in a leading hobby magazine then reported in the same. Lots of top sponsors supported me and the series. It was car drifting, 1/10 scale so fairly unusual yet its now one of the most popular classes

I used existing car tracks belonging to clubs around the UK, initially renting for events but after a year or two it became so popular they were almost paying us to be there!

You - all or any of you - could do the same with 1/16 tanks, but it would take effort and good negotiating skills. Maybe a small team effort from around the UK would be a good start. You also need good backers - speak to the people who import the goods and convince them it would grow the hobby and boost their sales, all for which they provide the prizes at each round. Offer them 'shop's at the events. Then find the top model tank magazine and write event coverage, new model reviews all with photos, and use them for free advertising.

Its all possible but you need to be enthusiastic and dedicated, and preferably retired because you'll be running a busy business! I'd love to be part of it and have many contacts and organisational experience but l'd like to see some experienced tankers on the team. Not for the faint hearted but very rewarding.

I know what you mean, I attend national scale rock crawling events, which are 160 miles away. They are so popular (G6/Scale Nationals) that people fly over from Spain/Holland etc to take part. That said, they still get 50-200 people attending? Yup, sponsors, raffles, and prizes.

It's all good natured/humoured fun, and no one takes it massively seriously..unless they want to (using winches etc at every opportunity).

It's broadcast globally and G6 travels the globe organising the event in different countries, so yes it's a full time job.

If anyone knows of a location that would be a start. Though it has crossed my mind that we could tie it in with a military show (Yorkshire Show or any of the others) which would give us a perfect location from the outset, and an interested audience. Camping and food on site, and hotels etc all around.

Anyone up for getting this off the ground maybe for next year? 8O

These are the rules for our Class A tanks that we use as guidelines...

Minimum Requirements:

1) You must have a Tamiya apple receiver. This apple must be able to receive hits at a minimum of 10 meters. The apple must not be obstructed by any stowage, guns, figures, etc.. in a 360 degree radius.

2) You must have an emitter capable of hitting a Tamiya apple at a minimum of 10 meters

3) Your emitter must be recessed at least 9mm back inside a tube...

4) your tank must not be excessively fast to scale speed for the type you are operating.

5) your tank must have the damage speed set up

TANK SETTINGS:

All stock full option Tamiya tanks will be deemed to be set up properly once tested for the above. As all Tamiya tanks are preset this will only apply to Clark Boards, IBU’s, ASP, SLU’s, etc…

Your tank must be set for the appropriate number of hits to destroy it. Tamiya's are preset of course So all others will be set up according to models:
Heavy takes 9 hits. These are tanks like Tiger, King Tiger, KV-1 & 2, and will include all assault guns, Stugs, Jagdpanthers, Jagdpanzers,
Medium takes 6 hits These are tanks like Shermans, Pz. IV, T34, Pershing
Light takes 3 hits These are tanks like Pz. III, and will include our automated gun positions

Your tank must be set for reload times as follows:
Heavy 9 sec reload
Medium 5 sec reload
Light takes 3 sec reload.

your tank must have the following damage settings:

First hit reduces speed to 50% regardless of class.
at the following number of hits the speed is reduced a further 25% - Heavy 5 hits, Medium 4 hits , Light 2 hits

Your tank must run at close to scale speed based on the model tank you are operating. We have a chart for most models. If your tank runs at excessive speeds we should be able to trim your radio throttle to reduce it to manageable speed.
