The Bulge

Post by hunterkiller »

Hi gang, did anyone watch The Bulge on Sky 531 last night?-Great footage of Tigers,Panthers and the dreaded 88`s.One quite comical scene, but true, light Stuart tanks passing two destroyed Tigers. It gave a real impression that the Stuarts knocked them out.!!!!!!!!!!.And what about the story of the Yank in his foxhole brewing his coffee, hearing loud squeaking, and sticking his head out to see Tiger wheels passing 8 INCHES from his hole, and the commander on top reading a map, completely oblivious to him.Change of underwear time me thinks!!!!!:

Reminds me of the war vet I was chatting to in Arromanche who revealed what really went on. One tale related to the, I think it was a Sten gun of some sort, that was triggered by pulling the rear into your shoulder. Great idea for quick firing without reaching for the trigger, until you were in a wooded area and turned around with it dangling from your waist...at which point a massive burst of machine gun fire went flailing at your comrades sitting around drinking tea!

Hi,yes you`re right, but it was just how he referred to the fact that he said he heard a "loud squeaking",and popped his head up to see a Tiger Tank 8 inches away. I mean,a loud squeak from a Tiger Tank is like saying he heard a slight hum from a Stuka!!
Mind you,in another part a yank told how he ran to the side of a Tiger, and put a "sticky bomb" on the wheels. It went off and he noticed the tank commander drop inside the tank, followed by a nice hand grenade, and a sheet of flame!!!-  See,those yanks, all the time in the world!!! Ha Ha;D

The early Stens had a reputation for being just as lethal to their own side as the enemy. My Grandfather told me he once heard of a nasty training accident where a guy jumped into a packed bren gun carrier carrying one, and the jolt set it off on full auto - 9mm bullets + metal box = lethal ricochet x full clip... :o
