400 or 480 motors for heng long t34

Post by wyvern »

Hi,

I have bought some HL standard ratio steel gearboxes from forgebear for my t-34 and was looking at which motors to fit. I was either going to go with the jp pro 400 or 480 motors with 5amp fuses inline. I was wondering if the 480s are a bit overkill given that this is a mostly plastic tank that will be driven over shortish grass and a bit of concrete or is the extra torque helpful. I was going to lower it and fit bearings to the output shaft amongst other things but otherwise its going to remain pretty standard lightweight plastic.

Cheers

Two things to consider - what is the amps draw of the motors and what's the continuous capability of the esc's. If you are using the stock MFU it will probably be low.

Secondly, the way to get effective torque without going large on motors is to use a lower ration gearbox, possibly not what you have not bought, though Dave stock's them.

HL tanks are already too fast and have a poor smooth proportional.start from a standstill so unless you are investing a pile of money on entirely new hobby standard electronics I'd suggest a standard size motor and standard or greater turns but of a higher quality (more turns equals greater torque and slower turns). Hope this helps.

Just a thought about something else to consider. Without digging deeper, I seem to recall that 400 and 480 brushed motors are longer and fatter than the stock 380 examples HL supply. This means it can be a bit of a squeeze fitting them in without fouling terminals, each other, or by moving the gears out of alignment with the hull sides. It might not be an issue with the T34, but it certainly is with the Pz 111, which has similar hull dimensions to the T34 I think. In your position, I would try to find the relevant dimensions re: compatibility. It might also be an idea just to give the ones you were supplied with a good workout, before deciding to dump them. ;)
A bit more research won't go amiss, and there's plenty of stuff relating to gears, ratios, upgrades and so on, in the Burgeoning Archives here
Above all, try to enjoy the experience, though... :D
