Smoke unit wire

Post by Alstone »

Hi guys, does anyone know where I can get some resistance wire to repair a smoke unit, I think it is 44 swg, the smallest I can get hold of is 32 swg, or of cause a replacement element ?

Hi

Tony (Tiger205) gave me some polystyrene cutting wire. These are the things you find in craft shops for hot-wire cutting of polystyrene. I'm afraid due to his passing away I don't know where he got the wire from, but I imagine it would be from an arts and crafts style hobby shop.
What I have noticed in some of the later smoking units is that they have replaced the wire with an ~10 Ohm resistor. This has to be a high wattage resistor though as taking about 7 volts at an amp means it is taking 7 watts.

If you are repairing an old (black) smoker and you haven't already taken it apart, then the easy way to repair it is NOT to try to split it at the obvious moulding joints as manufactured, but to hacksaw off just the lid of the 'box' part. It is then much easier to epoxy back together once you have repaired it.

Thanks Nige, I never thought of using a resister for a heater, and I do have some low ohm wire wound ones so that looks like the way to go. The unit that needs the repair has a removable lid so that’s ok also. :)
