HL Truck Mods

Heng Long/WPL are now manufacturing 1/16 scale RC trucks, so it seemed sensible to create a forum area dedicated to the amazing things that members are doing with them. Post your builds, mods, and tips here.

Hi, I quote you, Roboticus, but the message is for Max too.

The F150/euro truck version, does not matter, it is the same board. The great thing is you can put the sounds you want in them (I use one for a P40 warhawk plane...) The dasmikro (benedini copy) is really an amazing board, it does not only have a lot of sounds, but smoke and 15 light outputs. The only think that may need is a bit more of soundpower, but it can be fixed with a euro sound amplifier or just a better speaker. Keep in mind the original heng long tanks have a 0.3 Watt speaker and they are loud more than enough... And this dasmikro is able to throw 1W watt sound, so again, is just a matter of connecting a decent speaker.

BUT I agree with max that the board is complicated to use at the beginning, but in this case the squeeze is well worth the juice.

The turbo may seem excessive, but hey we all need more BOOST! lol

Just because it is soo big, i have decided to leave the smaller turbo and therefore run a compound setup, so the small turbo will help to spool the larger one. More parts to follow this evening!

Thanks for the info.

I guess I just got unlucky, because the speaker that came with my dasmikro is far too large for these trucks.

Chase, can you put it in a crate in the back? Give me the dimensions of the speaker and I can print you a crate for it. A photo would be helpful.

Will, I ordered these

https://www.ebay.com/itm/6-12V-30-600-1 ... 2749.l2649

I'm pretty sure the 1200 RPM rating is at 12 volts so I won't get that much, but it still should be better than the 600 RPM motors I have now. Other than the slow speed I like the dual motor set up. I have it in the WC51 and it might go in the WC64 ambulance. I ordered enough to do both. They're pretty cheap, like 4 bucks each.

I got the RTR Ural today. I'm impressed. It's got an actual servo and everything. The trim even works. It seems a bit slow, but I haven't done a measured time trial yet. Now I have to search the hippie brain and try to remember the formula. I think ... 82.5 feet is a scale quarter mile, cover that in 15 seconds and you're at a scale 60 mph. Maybe.

Anyway, I can see even more aftermarket upgrade parts coming out for these, and if they're smart they'll do sound. I wonder if Erik could McGyver a way to use the Taigen sound card. Hmmm.

So here's the truck

I've also got the kit so now I'll have to build that and see how it does on the ESC I've been using. And this thing has plenty of room for a sound system. I could put a rather large speaker back there if I was of a mind to. Ha! A 6x9 Kenwood! :haha: :haha:

The speaker is 66mm x 43mm x 30mm. Though, my truck no longer has a bed as I turned it into the M48 tractor variant of the M35.

About the only thing I could think of is swapping out the spare tire with some kind of toolbox for the speaker, and I couldn't ask ya to engineer that for me. Thanks for the offer though :). I'll probably just save this one for my Bruder Mack conversion, and just not buy anything else from bangood.

Plus, I discovered that my Pershing isn't running right today. I think it's time to save up for the new Taigen electronics, and move away from my double RX-18 setup. lol

So I'm not the only one with an ailing Pershing, eh?

Back to the matter at hand ... Have you thought about putting the speaker inside the tanker? You'd have to hook up some kind of ultra slick contact points for the two wires, maybe in the fifth wheel? Just a thought, but that might make for an interesting project in itself. Or maybe something like this?

https://www.mouser.com/ProductDetail/Ad ... gJG4PD_BwE

At just two bucks it might be worth it just as an experiment. In fact, I might get one myself, just to check them out. At just 1 inch in diameter it should fit right between the frame rails where it will be out of sight but still give good sound if it's pointed at the ground.

But I checked again and they want ten bucks shipping so unless you're buying multiple speakers it's not such a good deal.

I can see if any of the little ones I have here are still working and if so I can send you one, no charge, but even these are just a wee bit too big to fit between the frame rails. On the WC51 I had to put it in on an angle to get it shoehorned in there, so if it fails it's gonna be a PITA to get out of there.

This one is also small enough to fit between the frame rails but is more expensive and only rated for two watts.

Trying to get big sound from a small truck is turning out to be harder than it looks. But, there's so much space in the Ural I'm thinking about trying one of the twin speaker jobs. Those speakers are pretty big, at 100x45x20 millimeters, but they do sound pretty good.
