Waethering air recon flags on tanks.
Waethering air recon flags on tanks.
Hello guys.
New here, so after my intro this is my first real post.
I have two Tiger 1 tanks, one Taigen metal edition early version, and one Torro WSN late version.
A while ago I bought 2 flags which I will use as air recon flags on both Tigers.
My early version is weathered with paint and real sand so the flag looks a bit too unmolested on that one.
The late Tiger 1 is almost in the shape I got it, so it will need some work.
Before I got on here, I checked the WWW for flag tutorials, but actually without any luck.
Maybe some of you guys can show me the way?
Thnkz, Rob.

Re: Waethering air recon flags on tanks.
My late type Tiger from Torro, which seems to be not "period-correct", according to the early style road wheels.
This is a WSN tank, so without a NIMH battery, but it runs on AAA ones.
Did not know that when I bought it used from the internet.'
Due to the very bad packing by the seller, it came in with a broken barrel and one exhaust shield was broken too, so I took it off.
The left rear mudguard was missing too.
I will not put very much money into this one, maybe add some little accessories to it.
Added some scratches and oil around the exhausts. Will work on some rust/weathering, later today.
I've been thinking of getting a battery pack with loader for it, which seems to be available from Torro.
Any of you have any experience with it? should be a 9.6V package.
Anyway, here are some pics too
Added some "oil" seeping out of some of the wheel bearings/seals, in gloss black.

Also added some oil leaks at the rear, put some black on the left exhaust and right side exhaust shield, and did a bit of washing with terpentine.

Re: Waethering air recon flags on tanks.
The camo nets I did make from bandages, which I sprayed with grey paint several times.
Wrapped them around the barrels and added slices of it to hang downwards. Painted brown and green dots on 'm and used some kitchen herbs to simulate some leaves
For the weathering and mud on the wheels/tracks on my Taigen early one, I used Humbrol enamel paint.
Did not even take the tracks off. Loosened the track tensioners as much as possible to get a lot of slack.
Took the hull off and painted the tracks with a brush.
Next day I ran over it with a darker earth color, which gave the rusty look.
First time i did this, my first big scale tanks too.
Next I panted the road wheels in sand color around the middle, later with darker earth among the outsides.
When all dried up i used white glue and several colors of sand to make the dried mud effect.
Just put the glue on with a brush and put the sand on with my fingers. But before doing this, I put some plastic bags on the lowers to prevent sand getting into the metal gears!
Because this was my first weathering session, I must say it worked out very well for me.
maybe you experts have another opinion, so let me know what you think, so I might learn for the next time.

I also painted the first inner road wheel in brown, because it does not look good when it is in the very clean, stock grey color. You can see that inner road wheel from above looking down at the Tiger. Painting this wheels makes it a bit more realistic.

Re: Waethering air recon flags on tanks.
In fact you cann't go wrong on this.
It's a tank, not a Ferrari from the showroom, right?
This afternoon I am expecting a package out of Germany, with some fuel barrels, 4 ammo boxes, a couple of helmets and so.
The late one will get some metal tow cables too, and a machine gun at the cupola too.
To be continued.

BTW, the nazi flags are for indoor use only.
Outside I take 'm off, because I do not want to offend anyone.
That's the reason they are just laying loose underneath the camo nets.
Maybe I can glue them on and make a cover for the swastika when i take 'm out.
Must think it over.

Air recon flags, on top of the Tiger 1 would as rule, have littel weathering or none. It's purpose, was to protect the tank from German Aircraft accidentally attacking it.
Keeping it in good condition would have been a priority.

As a side issue to Air Recon Flags, When I was in Recce in the Regiment we would Chalk the individual Radio Call sign of each FFR Landie on its Canopy roof,
The AAC Fixed wing Beavers and Helicopters would keep us upto date with Air Intel as we progressed.
