HL Truck Mods

Heng Long/WPL are now manufacturing 1/16 scale RC trucks, so it seemed sensible to create a forum area dedicated to the amazing things that members are doing with them. Post your builds, mods, and tips here.

Yes as cunning plans go this was not one of my best! I had already purchased a separate motor/gearbox and have just ordered a second one. As I am planning to have this brute pull a tank on a trailer, I am going to put a separate motor for each rear axle and also have the front axle driven, even though the Diamond was a 6x4. It does mean that I need a pair of matched motors otherwise this thing will pull itself apart. Frustration isn't the word as I'll now have to wait for the slow boat from China! At least I can carry on and get the build done while I wait, then just swap out the second motor/gearbox whenever the replacement arrives.

Only happened when I got last week and I been back and forward with Gearbest. They have thankfully finally accepted the parts were missing but what a faff that has been.

But yes I should have said so sorry. Not that it would have helped as I had mine on order for weeks prob same time everyone else. :)

I building another few trucks but thinking about ditching motor and transfer case and run bigger motors and another transfer case. There is a 1/24 crawler that axles and metal transfer cases are made for so it may be good.
If not the n20 motors 150rpm plus on an alloy bulkhead for direct drive.

Having done the design for the suspension mount I decided that I needed a couple of axle suspension mounts so I have designed this
Image
Here's the scad code
module springs () {
$fn=100;
difference () {
union () {
translate ([-7.5,0,0]) cube ([ 15,6.5,7.5]);
translate ([-18.2,0.7,1.4])rotate ([0,0,10]) cube ([ 11,1,4.8]);
translate ([7.4,2.7,1.4])rotate ([0,0,-10]) cube ([ 11,1,4.8]);
translate ([-22.2,-1.3,1.4])rotate ([0,0,10]) cube ([ 15.,1,4.8]);
translate ([7.4,1.4,1.4])rotate ([0,0,-10]) cube ([ 15.5,1,4.8]);
}
translate ([-7.6,-0.1,1.35]) cube ([ 16,1.1,4.8]);
translate ([-3.8,7.6,3.75])rotate ([90,0,0]) cylinder(h = 9, r = 1.1);
translate ([3.8,7.6,3.75])rotate ([90,0,0]) cylinder(h = 9, r = 1.1);
}
}
springs ();

Print it on it's side at .1mm layer height, takes me about 17 minutes per.

What you will need in the way of screws is
POZI PAN SELF TAPPING SCREWS A2 STAINLESS STEEL TAPPERS 2.2x13mm
which are easily available on evilbay

You will also need the spring steel leaves which are readily available

again evilbay, add one or two steel leaves depending on loading requirements.

Here it is printed

It's a lot cheaper than spending £11 a set from this chap

I've got a friend who is an excellent designer and he's whipped up a WC51, which may be followed by the WC53 ambulance and the WC56 Command Car.

Looks great. Very well done so far.

I onto next project but reached a wall. I need to get some wheels 3d printed!
Or I need to get drive adaptors printed and machine some wheels. I think I may have to use WPL parts for my MAN 6x4 Truck.

Although I may have upgrade the bearings on the axles to take more load.

The frame is part of the file package, and I printed it on my 3D printer.

Will, if you need some wheels printed you should talk to Wayne (Midlife). He and I are both of the same mind about prices and how ridiculous they are, and I know Wayne does stuff for guys in the UK for just cost of plastic and postage. I doubt you'll get a better deal anywhere else and Wayne is a great guy to work with. How far are you from Manchester, Will?

Manchester is 3hrs away. But yes I was thinking about contacting Wayne. Need to get a few other puts off him.aswell. my only issue is I now need to CAD a wheel that I require and my CAD broken! Grrr.

It's nice to know there are a few good fellows out there to do it for the love of modelling.

Wayne is a good chap already rated very highly in my book

Some feedback on that motor issue with the kit Gaz truck, after contacting the seller he is refunding me £5 to settle the eBay complaint so I said yes. It pays for one of my high-torque motors that I've ordered :D
