Thanks for the info.Max-U52 wrote:Richard, I might start with a slightly larger metal box than the tarr has, first using the 10 ohm 1 watt and a fan, running on straight 7.4 lipo. You might even use two resistors for more smoke. A pair of slightly larger output tubes, maybe 1/4 imch ID, could deliver smoke to each end of a building, or use one to provide general smoke and one under a window to get more smoke from that one point.

Re: Smoke Units.
I have another question, based on my ignorance of smokers. The heating element in my Tarr smokers has exposed wiring. All the wire wound resistors that come up in my searches are ceramic covered. Will they still work?

If the resistor gets hot enough it should. One thing to keep in mind, if you are thinking of using two resistors wired in parallel, the total resistance of the load will be approximately halved which will cause the current draw on the mfu circuit to double. You could end up letting the smoke out of the mfu and electronics stop working when you do that.

You can pick up a Tar smoke unit from about £15, it’s a nice quiet improvement over the std unit.
I run a Tar unit but I’d like a lot more smoke at startup. My son in law has one of these e-cig things & it can put out seriously antisocial amounts of smoke.
I had a good look at it & I think it would be an easy mod to fit it to run alongside the Tar unit.
Cheers

Wayne, I am running a TARR smoke unit, and the resistor burnt out for some reason upon installation. Janus at TARR is sending me a replacement as we speak. Thanks for the info. I don't think I will use the e-cig thing.

Thanks for that. It brings back vague memories of the electricity laws that I was taught back in the 1960s.Dusty Steppes wrote:If the resistor gets hot enough it should. Re: Smoke Units.
You wrap the Kevlar wick around the ceramic body of the resistor a few times and let the ends fall into the wadding that holds the oil. As for running two in parallel and frying boards, for you, Richard that won't be a concern in a building as you'll have no board, just a power supply with an on/off switch, and i should have said run the two resistors in parallel. That will decrease battery life, but I'm assuming you'll be using some sort of low voltage alarm.
I have a video at my youtube channel of how I made the smoker in the JP, I just have to find it. For a building you just need a metal box with a fuel inlet and however many outlet fittings in the top that you want to use, and a fan attached with the resistor inside, and I'd definitely start with just one resistor and see if it produces what you want before I tried two. Best to keep things as simple as we can, eh?

Here's one of my early test videos when I first began my smoker education, maybe it will give you ideas, and should show how the wick is wrapped, after the first 30 seconds or so. Hey, I never claimed to be Cecil B. DeMille.

Re: Smoke Units.
Thanks for that Gary. The result is very impressive. What exactly is your Kevlar wick? Searching on UK eBay produces bulky items 25mm plus wide. Yours looks more like string.
