Re: The 3D Printer Thread
The Dr Who Tardis is based on what was commonly known as a Police Box. Dr Who started in the early 60's when these boxes were commonplace, they held an emergency phone and tools etc They were dark blue.
Telephone boxes used to look like the red one, they were payphones for public use.
However, and this is where it gets interesting, Telephone boxes should have died out with mobile phones....but there is a loophole in the planning laws, the telephone companies do not need planning permission to stick one wherever they like. They are now springing up all over the place, sometimes rows of them.
Why?
The new design has illuminated sides plastered with large adverts. The phone companies can put the boxes wherever they like and get advertising revenue. Local authorities are now pressing central government to change the law so that they can stop the infestation.

I suppose the thing I need to ask myself is what did phone booths (if the even had them then) look like in the late '30s? I tried searching old fashioned and old time phone booths and got some good results, but so few of the photos have a date that I can find.

Have a look in Wikipedia under Red Telephone box. They had K numbers, and basically changed very little over the years.

What I love about Sir Giles Gilbert Scott who designed the iconic red telephone box is that as a world renowned architect he also designed the classic Waterloo Bridge and some truly memorable buildings across the Country such as Liverpool Cathedral and Battersea Power Station.
That's what I call versatile.

Add to that the buildings designed by his father and grandfather you have an extremely talented family.jarndice wrote:What I love about Sir Giles Gilbert Scott who designed the iconic red telephone box is that as a world renowned architect he also designed the classic Waterloo Bridge and some truly memorable buildings across the Country such as Liverpool Cathedral and Battersea Power Station.

Thanks for all the info, Guys. I think I can make a reasonable facsimile, with a little help from my friends. I may have to change the footprint a bit, but it will be interesting. I'll keep ya posted.

Re: The 3D Printer Thread
So i think i might just have to bite the bullet on one of these 3D printer thingies.
It is just going to open up a world of possibilites for me and making parts for the crazy builds i sometimes have popping into my head!
Midlife has pointed me in the direction of a really cool looking printer kit. So once i have shifted my next truck i will be making some space and placing an order.
Looks like i will be spending alot more time in here for forseable weeks to get all the info i can about filaments and setups and how these things work and are like to use.
Lucky i also have CAD access so i can export in the given file formats, but obviously have a bit of catch up and learning to do.
Count me in for printing
Is there a list somewhere in one place of what printers everyone has so i can also maybe look and see how these compare?
Anyone got some good sites or links which are useful for a new dude researching this tech?
