Firstly, 'Stanlley' is not a typo, it's how the genial Malaysian spells his forename. Perhaps he has some welsh ancestry Anyway, I rather like his 'things to upgrade on your tank' videos, partly because they connect to frequently discussed topics here, but also because in this first video he gives a no nonsense account of the properties of Heng Long and Mato gearboxes. Better still, he explains how to work out ratios, and which ratios to choose, without the
smattering of pseudoscience that often accompanies tank transmission talk.

We know, of course that he has an agenda too: he's trying to sell us stuff (who isn't these days?) BUT: he's not trying too hard

Hmmm...annoying plastic stripping soound?? Did no one tell him that the noise is the slipper clutch that prevents the gears getting stripped? It is pretty much impossible to strip the gears on a plastic gearbox because the slipper clutch will do its job and slip as soon as the gearbox comes under pressure. I have used them in tanks with no problem, and perversely I take the gears apart and use epoxy to lock the slipper part. The gears still don't strip, they aren't actually plastic, they are hard wearing nylon, and above all else they are 'very' quiet.

...Unless I'm very much mistaken, Nylon is actually a type of plastic belonging to the Polyamide family, Rob, and so he got that bit right.. The original (Gk) sense of the word from which 'Plastic' is derived was 'To mould', but has come to be a generic term for materials synthesised from a range of organic polymers. It was also used in the 1960s by my Hippie peers to describe 'straight' people..i.e., those who had not 'Turned on', and dropped out.
Hmm..In any event, if plastic gears problems are a something of a myth, it's one many people subscribe to, unfortunately. The point is, though- by extension- If the gears in my car gearbox began to slip, for example, without actually shearing off, I'd be fairly pi**sed off at apparently losing all traction, whilst gaining puzzling scary sounds. Are 'plastic' gears meant to 'slip' then, as you say, without actually stripping? If that's the case, I'd personally rather have gears that mesh properly without slipping. If the gears are meant to slip to prevent the motors from stalling, that would make more sense...a sort of emergency de-clutching. But I don't think they should.
I posted the link because I thought that his simply explanation on how to choose gears, or how to go about upgrading HL/Taigen products, would be of interest to new members of the Forum. I think he's more engaging than many others on Youtube...

Mind you, going on what he said about gear ratios for modern tanks, he shot himself in the foot, cos what he suggested isn't much different to standard heng long ratios. How cool to find that out

I also watched his video on how to fit magnets for chassis/hull mounting. As much as it pains me to say this, especially for the risk of making a certain someone big headed. . . . Oh, here goes. . . . I must admit, even without pictures or videos, I thought that Shaun explains it much better. . . .

But notwithstanding the fact the there's always a bit of salesmanship, mixed with smoke and mirrors, in these vids ( he has to make a living after all, I guess.. ), I still think his offerings are a good starting point good for HL /Taigen novices.
Capt. Jarndice (Shaun), has the advantage of being highly accomplished in being able to fashion pictures with words, whilst adding some seasoned wit. (Even if people taunt him about his pic-free contributions
In his unique world, words work better. He's a sort of RC Tank Dickens
