Re: SdKfz 164 Nashorn by Alwyn Turner
Going through my Nashorn book again, I came across some drawings showing what I assume to have been a field addition in the form of a couple of periscopes, one each side, fitted to the top of the internal triangular brace. They looked interesting so I decide to have a go at making a much simplified version. So I got hold of a couple of Tiger periscopes and this is the result.
My brass work is still not very good, but my excuse is that they were installed by a novice. (Not that far from the truth!)Richard

Not very good brasswork he says! I hope you've not got a straight face typing that because it looks fab. I'm very jealous!

I'm quite pleased. The first of these periscopes seemed to take an eternity, whilst the second has gone together in no time.

I have lots of other things to go on board. I just hope I'm not going too over the top.

Incidentally, if anyone wishes to make a more accurate version of the periscopes, you will need to fit an extra bracket between the pivots on the actual unit and the bracket which I have made. This will enable the periscope to be moved vertically.

Re: SdKfz 164 Nashorn by Alwyn Turner
I have now fitted the gun into place so I can extend the camo on to the gun shield and barrel. It immediately brought up a significant problem. The seat for the gunner is on the end of the brass rod on the lower middle.
I have tried the figure I am proposing to use, and short of amputating both legs, I can't see how on earth he can sit down. The seat is correctly placed. I can only find one photo with a gunner in situe, but that is from the back and you can't see the legs. I am fairly certain the Heer did not pick double leg amputees for their crew so if anyone has any decent suggestions, I am all ears.Richard

Hi Richard, you are quite right the gunners must all have been midgets. First you need fully articulated figures, and this is how they fit

but the guy cetainly can't have been very comfortable. You also need the seat as far back on the bar as possible.
Best regards
Alwyn
