Greetings to you all,
My name is Brian and I have returned to R/C modelling after a number(many) of years gap. Previously I have built boats & cars but have always wanted to build & operate an R/C tank. When I was a boat modeller my ambition was to build an R/C LCT to carry an R/C tank but funds never permitted it.
I am soaking up some of the knowledge on this forum before I make my decision what to buy, my current thoughts are Tamiya Sherman, Tiger or King Tiger as they seem to be well established kits 'out of the box' .
My background is computers, having spent > 40 years in IT. As well as choosing a tank kit I am on the lookout for a 3D printer so have been following the discussions here too. I am so impressed by the skills demonstrated right across this forum.

A 3D printer is a good idea, the Creality CR10 is the printer to have at the moment.
Have a look on Thingiverse, there are lots of things on there to dabble with, once you’re used to the printer there is a 1/16 LCM3 you can print, don’t make it you’re first print though as there’s lots to learn first.
Here’s the one I printed..

Welcome along, you have a good plan for your first tank/s. The Sherman and tiger are very reliable runners.

Welcome! Yes, a Tamiya full-option kit would be a great introduction to the hobby. Firstly, you'll build your first tank almost from scratch. Then you'll have to install its nervous system, and fire it into life for the first time. It will need painting too, and later given a unit identity. All in all, this will cover some of the major disciplines within the hobby. Boning up on the history of the tank and the theatres of war it served in, can only add to the interest. 
The downside is that in the last few months Tamiya prices have increased scarily. The Tiger 1, for example is now more than £140 dearer that it was in the autumn. More recent, and more complex, models like the Leopard 2, JGSDF type 10, and the upcoming Abrams M1A2 are reaching stratospheric prices (well in excess of £1,000). Even the basic Sherman is creeping up in price.
If money's no object, a Tamiya would be a great start...
For some, the outlay can bring on the need for CPR
, or... the need to intercept large packages before the partner gets to see them, along with their accompanying invoices

Thanks for the warm welcome, I will take on board all the advice offered.
I am still mulling over the choice betwen buying a 3D printer or a tank first; I have a couple of projects running at present that would benefit from having the printer (1/10 scale Landrover D90 conversion on an old Tamiya chassis & possibly scratch building an Air Portable Landrover ) vs starting afresh with a tank kit. Decisions decisions.......
