Can't wait to see your build, Ad. I'm starting on a JpIV 70 also. I'm going with the steel wheels, no zim, and thinking about adding some schurzen. I'll have to start a build thread, I guess!

I'm cheating a little bit by using the Tamiya kit. It's a good looking tank!

I won't be starting it for a little while so I'll watch your first :)

I'm on with a JP IV L70 too, unfortunately I couldn't stretch to the Tamiya version, so I'm slumming it with a resin PZ IV conversion kit.
Shame there's not a comedy build section, I could post my build there...
Cheers

Don't be daft. I saved up for this for ages - stupid tamiy prices.

A conversion can be just as good as the tamiya one.

Wayne I'm sure it's much better than you think. For most the Tamiya hill is a long arduous hill to climb

I'd like to see some photos of your progress.

There could have been a Jagdpanzer IV out there with zimmerit and steel wheels, but we may never know for certain. Here's an amazing artists's impression of one with these essentials, and it looks every bit like a genuine photo. Maybe you could use it as your Artist's model, Adam... :) Incidentally, by reading the thread linked with the pic, it's clear that the artist thought such a mythical beast once existed.

I would justify it thus:

Little or zero chance an older/earlier build tank would not be with Zimmerit we probably agree, but such a vehicle could conceivably be fitted with the steel lead road wheels in a rear area maintenance facility, or by forward flying squads taking care of such things if not the crew themselves .
I would make an assumption that ammo and fuel would be the priority supply to reach front line areas where replacement parts or such would struggle past rear supply depots.

Zimmerit is a fixed time process unlikely field applied but the road wheels? For sure a plausible scenario to be found on an early version

It should be remembered that the Tiger 1 was officially either an "Early" or a "Late" it is the modelling fraternity that came up with the title "Mid" and that is because many pictures show an "Early" with "Late" wheels or a "Late" with "Early" Wheels it boils down to what was available at the forward workshop when a damaged Tiger 1 was brought in for repair.
So an "Early" Jagdpanzer with Zimmerit and late wheels was by no means an unlikely sight at a time when any spares for the thing was a gift horse not to be ignored.

As the others have said it's pretty common to find photos of German armor in WW2 with all sorts of modifications that don't fit into the neat little version boxes that have been created by historians and model companies. With disrupted manufacturing, limited supplies and a desperate need to have working vehicles in the field all sorts of inconsistencies can be found and photos don't exist of every tank that saw action. I think it would be very hard to prove it didn't happen and when it comes down to it, as long as you're happy who gives a toss what some armchair expert thinks?
