HL Truck Mods

Heng Long/WPL are now manufacturing 1/16 scale RC trucks, so it seemed sensible to create a forum area dedicated to the amazing things that members are doing with them. Post your builds, mods, and tips here.

HL Truck Mods

Post by midlife306 »

Hi Gary/Richard, you've got me looking at the pics again, rather than the running board being wrong, I think the bottom of the door is to low on the cab & ive been using that as the datum for the channeling.
Tomorrow I'll use the running board as the datum & channel the cab lower.
I agree the front edge of the door needs bringing forward a tad, I'll try & improve it when I fix the bottom of the doors.
I'm planning on changing the lights & LEDing them, the brush guards I'll redo with brass, I've got the bar, just need to get some strip.
The Lancia cab has just come off the printer, the windscreen surround was way too thin, I'll have to sort that with plasticard, there's a shed load of support material on it, I've got about 50% of it off but as the cab is quite fragile I'm having to be careful removing it.

I'll post more pics in the morningImage
Cheers
Wayne

I'd really like to see a photo of the bottom of the cab after you channel it. Bitte. ;)

And I agree that it's the bottom of the door that's too low. Compare placement to the top and bottom of the fender and it becomes more apparent. Right now it's good to the top of the tire, but once you drop the cab another 5mm that will change so the bottom door line needs to come up.

Hi Gary,
I’ve done a bit of playing around today & I think ive finally cracked itImage
ImageImage

You asked for a couple of pics of the channeling, first attempt I found the c/l of the cab and drew a couple of lines 28mm either side.
At the back I measured & scribed a line 10mm up from the bottom.
Putting a ruler on the cab floor I found that the printed chassis rails at the front were 3mm higher than the cab floor, so I scribed lines 7mm up.
After all the line work was done & I was happy I got the Dremel out with a fine circular Saw attachment, keeping it running around 12,000rpm it just cut & didn’t melt its way through the plastic. Overall it was quite accurate, I only had to do a little filing to clean things up afterwards.
Today all I did was deepen the cuts by 5 then 10mm to get to the desired height.
They say measure twice cut once, well I measure 15 times, lose my bottle & cut it shallow & then have to cut it again.

Oh I forgot to say, I had to move the front suspension & axle as far forward as possible to get the front wheels in the correct spot.

Don't try this at home. @) :O :/ :haha: :haha: 8)

phpBB [video]

Doesn't that look a lot like an opel blitz in the thumbnail? @) :silent:

Shadow is easy to see, but if you can spot Nancy, that's one of his very favorite hang-outs. 8)

So, Nancy's spot looks like it's on top of the television. Probably keeps him a lot smarter then if he liked to sit in front of it, instead.

No, not on the TV, that's only 2 inches thick. Watch close from 1:18 to 1:20. That's his chair, but he only uses the very top.

I forgot I wanted to turn the lights on and off a time or two, to emphasize just how bright those little lights really are. I can't wait for warm weather, to drive around the yard with the goggles. I might try driving it from inside but these FPV TXs have trouble with walls.

Got it. I must have been looking at something else shiny and thought it was his eyes. There's an even better view at 2:27.

OK, I'd like to back-track to the beginning of the thread for a minute and get back to the SS100. There was some discussion about track alignment between the single front tire and dual rears. The consensus was they should be even, with the outside face of the front tire in line with the rear (equal distance from the centerline). I ordered a 1/48 scale SS100 kit by Tamiya and they seem to disagree. In the front views the front tire is in line with what looks like the center between the dual rear tires.

You can also see in the top view that the rear fenders are wider than the front.

So what do you guys think? There's been some discussion in Roy's P4 thread about the accuracy at Tamiya, and they seem to be getting it right, so should I build my SS100 like this one is?
