Hi thought I would introduce myself my name is Stu and live in the UK I'm new to rc tanks so I will be asking a lot of questions. I currently have a HL Tiger 1 tank given to me by my uncle.

Welcome along Stu, where are you in the UK? There are plenty of clubs around.
I’d expect your Tiger to be a 27mhz version, a photo of the inside would confirm it. Most people upgrade their controls so I’d expect someone to offer you a controller and christals for little money.

Welcome to the Forum
Have you looked inside your "Tiger 1 Early" yet?
Is there a "Whip" aerial on the engine grille and underneath the Tank is there a white label with a black number on it?
Finally are the tools and fittings moulded onto the body,? if the answer to these questions is yes then this is probably a 27MHz Analogue Tiger 1 with a Crystal in the Control Board,
It might be an RX18 and if the cables are plugged in then it probably is but if the cables are soldered in -place then it is an earlier board,
As you are without a matching Transmitter pointing you in the direction of an RC5HL (Lite) converter is a waste of money,
The RX18 MHz analogue board is an easy and relatively cheap conversion, simply unplug the cables from the board and plug them into a 2.4 GHz RX18 digital board, make sure the new RX18 board comes with a matching Transmitter,
And you are pretty much ready to go,
If you do not have a Whip aerial then it might be a 2.4 GHz Digital RX18 board and then all you need is a transmitter that matches the Version of the RX18 in your Tank, that will be written on the front of the Control board along with the detail of it being a Digital board.
I noticed the non standard Jack on the side of the body, It did not come out of the box like that and when you get your Tank running the Turret will hit the Jack and prevent the turret from turning.
Opening the Tank is a simple matter of finding the screws holding the Body to the Hull there are some under the Tracks that most newbies miss,

STU, You have an early board with all the cables soldered into the control board,
The later boards have the cables plugged into marked sockets which is why you will come across the term "Plug & Play" this refers to changing onto an aftermarket control board,
The electrics on your Tiger are in need of total renovation..
There are various Dealers who will happily sell you the necessary cables and sockets that will allow you to do the conversion, If you trawl through these pages you will learn that just about anything can be done with a Heng Long Tiger 1 and the upgrades are readily available, I would not try to run this Tiger with its present setup, The Plastic Gearboxes are fine if they are unstressed and the Turret motors and servos should be good but the various sockets and cables will need changing.

Good morning!
Welcome to the Forum. Thank you for the pictures of your early Generation 1 Heng Long Tiger. This has the RX-13 board with the crystal and will need a TX with the matching crystal for it to work. Check your tracks and make sure that there are no weak spots or breaks. They start to give way after a decade or so ( mine did ) but the good news is that any bad links are easily replaceable with a spare link or two. The tank will have red headlights and be blazing fast in all it's one speed glory. Turret will rotate, the main gun will cycle up and down and if you are lucky, the airgun will work. ( Do not use the malformed plastic shot that came with these if you have any...Go out and get yourself a proper bottle of airsoft shot for it ) You should have main gun sound and mg sound. There are a couple of very detailed threads here on the Forum which can guide you through upgrading this tank into a very respectable battler or detail rich runner. Or you can be like me and leave it stock. I did so because when this tank first came out on the market, it was one of a kind. Actual 1/16 scale Tiger 1 with features that did not require 1000.00 + for the Tamiya version Made me weak in the knees when I found it and I could not wait til' I had one. So, good luck and definitely, enjoy your Tiger!
