High Grade Low Profile Metal Gearboxes, help with drive shafts

Post by Phil »

(posted in Show off, thought it would get more hits here)

Had some gear boxes form my Panzer 3 I never fitted (PZ30089LP High Grade Low Profile Metal Gearboxes) unfortunately the drive shafts are to short for the Jagdpanther. So a friend of mine turned a few longer ones up for me (only ask for one set) so I have tree up for grabs!

They still need treading as he didn't have taps small enough, anyone out there able to help with tapping a tread please?

Phil

Thank you, I'll have a look tonight at the pre drilled holes and see what size they are. I guess its about time I learnt how to tap a tread instead of starting one! (drum roll please, I thank......... youll!)

Hi You will need a tap wrench then its a little bit like using a corkscrew .Just make sure you are square to the hole and it should go down quite easy ,dont force it or you will break the tap .

It's pretty easy, but as fv432 said, back the tap out. When I tap threads, esp small ones, I would put some thin oil on the tap, edge it in about a turn, back it back around half a turn, rotate it in till it starts to grab for a bit then back it out again. Keep doing this till you get to the thread depth required. Wash out the newly threaded hole then try the bolt.

Hope this helps and good luck!
