T34 Winter camouflage worn look technique

Post by Blackadder123 »

Hello,

My T34 currently sports the winter camouflage, but from the factory the colour is a monotone white. Looking at historical photos, the winter camouflage applied to T34s was often worn and the green showed through. I'd like to add this worn look to the T34. The question is, what technique could one use to simulate the green showing through? Is it better to just spray paint the whole tank green first then applying the white paint?

Any tips appreciated

This is what I have in mind:

(Yep that's War Thunder)

My idea would be to take a beaten brush, soak it with some green paint and dry most of it off on paper towel and dab the tank in the relevant parts....

Does anyone know which Tamiya green paint for the T34?

Best way is paint the tank 4bo green, then use the hairspray technique, overcoating in thinned down white and then chipping off the white where you want green through.

Could try a coat of hairspray over your standard paint, then once dry, spray a light coat of your white wash over the top.

Once its all dry, get a small container of water, an old tooth brush, dip the brush in the water and use it to literally brush the white away.
Keep dabbing the brush into the water as required to remove the burden.
Pay attention to areas that would see a lot of wear in service.

Once you get the effect you are looking for, stop.

You should do it in patches, and be mindful of not wetting the surface too much, this will reactivate the hairspray and risk a fail.
There is a lot of advice from far better than me available if you look and learn, but it does work.

Good luck and best wishes on your success

Mig Jiminez has a series of videos on Youtube, as well as this workshop, which I don't think came out too well given his expertise. Admittedly he was rushed.
