The first question to ask yourself is, can you design anything to print? If you can't, or aren't prepared to spend months learning, a printer is about as much use as buying a car when you don't have a driving licence, and aren't prepared to take lessons.

Sure, you can buy a Ferrari, park it on the driveway and tell everyone how fast it goes. Does that make you a better driver, a safer driver, or someone who knows how to control a car at high speed...nope, none of those things.

It might sound easy, it might look easy, it may even appear that others do it so it can't be that difficult. Never underestimate the effort that others had to put into getting something to work so well that it looks easy. :thumbup:

There are always plenty of printers on Ebay that people bought without understanding what they were doing.

If you put the effort in (and over 2 years on from my purchase and build I am still learning every time I design something), it's a totally absorbing side hobby to the tanks.

Yes some excellent points raised there by Rob, and another thing to bear in mind, a 3d printer if heavily used requires regular maintenance and frequent running repairs as both Rob and I can attest to. If you are planning to get a printer then it's worth downloading OPENSCAD and using it to design some simple items, plus read the excellent how to manuals and watch the OPENSCAD Youtube tutorials which will explain the 'how to'.

How I started in 3d printing was to design some parts for a Universal Carrier and pay one of the owners of a 3d printer to print them off for me.

Something else that I have come to realise is that the majority of those splendid prints that are seen on ye interweb are printed using Simplify 3D, a commercial slicing program, rather than Cura or Slicr, which are free. It makes a huge difference to the quality of the prints on any printer, but it certainly isn't cheap.

They are standard Arduino boards with Marlin firmware. Most of the components that you may need to replace over the life of the printer are readily available as it is a standard Reprap Prusa 3 printer. It comes with an instruction cd and cura on the cd as well. MAKE SURE you read the extra file on self-levelling - I missed it and wondered why the printer didn't self level. :{ :{
