Location question.

Post by capt midnight »

Just wanted to get an idea of what the general thoughts on this are.

Would it be a good idea to ask everyone to fill out their location so it shows on their posts? At least a country. I think it'd give other board members a general idea of where a member is located.

It has practical benefits. Recommending an event, or RC connected shop/ services/products can have geographical, financial, and logistical implications, especially where there's 3,000 miles of ocean between interested parties... :problem:
Just makes life simpler.

I like the idea but it should not be compulsory.
It is great that we have a membership from the farthest reaches of the Planet but that brings with it the knowledge that not all countries favour interaction between their citizens and "Foreigners" and while it is rarely illegal it is sometimes frowned upon,
And no I am not being paranoid we live in an open society and find it hard to comprehend anyone could have a down on our Hobby but its implications have the capacity to un-nerve some less reasonable administrations.
We spend a lot of our holidays in Mauritius, to a visitor it is welcoming but it is very repressive to its own citizens,
Again we had a great holiday in Cuba BUT to the people who call it home it is a Police State with all that that implies.
Our beaches and Hotels were off limits to the regular Cuban unless they had been vetted and the places were fenced off and guarded.
Not to protect us from thieves and vagabonds but to keep our capitalistic failings away from the minds of the general population.
Sorry if you think I am being melodramatic but I have been to places and seen things that would keep the coolest head awake at night.
Shaun.
I think I am about to upset someone :haha:

I agree with Shaun 100% on not being mandatory. The member could always put "private" in the field if they did not want their location broadcast. I too have seen the differences between cultures. Maybe not listing a location is just something a lot of newer members just do not think about.

I guess on the plus side, if locations are listed and you happen to be traveling close to another member, you could always contact them and maybe get together for a byte (pun intended) or cold one.

I noticed most of the folks on this side of the pond have locations listed. Just a bunch spread out here and there, and some newer members.

So, if Carl, Painless, or anyone else stateside ever make it this way it's sammich time!

That would be great. Unfortunately I think I am the only tanker in this goddamn country (Austria) Or at least the only one that wants to meet more people...
It would be great to see if someone else is here in the foru,.

Simply putting the country location shouldn't impact on privacy too much.. Of course, admitting to being in 'North Korea' might raise a few eyebrows, and some airsoft barrels too :D

I know that some websites and forums use a little national flag in place of location. That's fairly straightforward and unobtrusive.

Lol, Im afraid I am not in the US. I am Spanish but living in Austria. I used to live in Reading, Berkshire, and I ABSOLUTELLY LOVED it. I really would like to live in the island again...

And here in Austria... Well, for some unknown reason people here seems to not to have any hobbies or at least they dont share them. Its a real shame that makes me to be here very alone and sad...

Thats life I guess...
