RC Aeromodeler Getting Into Tanks

Post by Oxotnik »

Good Day, Gents. I'm an aeromodeler, who's pretty heavily into WWII warbirds, mostly European theatre. A friend in a aircraft (mostly) forum turned me on to Heng Long tanks, that were reasonably priced. So, I snagged a 1/16 HL Tiger I. Other than one RC boat, this is the only other non-flying RC model that I have. What fun it has been though. I bought the HL Tiger I with the zinc alloy gearbox, but have already rounded off the teeth on one of the gears, doing what the instructions told me not to do... run it through grass. Doh! So, I have a steel gear box on order, for the Tiger. My wife tolerates my RC obsession, but isn't into RC herself. She does enjoy motoring the Tiger around the house, though, I think mostly because it moves so slowly that she's not intimidated by it.

Anyway, I'm a Tanker noob, but plan to learn more about this fascinating aspect of modeling.

Head in the clouds, but feet firmly on the right track now, eh? :D A warm welcome to this often slightly eccentric Forum! Your RC experience will stand you in good stead, and should adapt fairly easily to rc tank control systems: especially with your existing HL Tiger experience. Just watch out for the impending armour addiction....Should you get withdrawal symptoms from the world of Warbirds; here's a compromise for you :lolno: :

I've been a lifelong fan of WW2 warbirds, but have scarcely touched the RC side of aeronautics. I did build a Spitfire Mk IX once, with 5ft (or thereby) wingspan, just because it remains for me the sexiest and most beautiful plane ever built. This example never took to the air, but was bolted to my ceiling for ogling purposes :lolno: :shh: I worked in London then, and there was really no safe space to fly it...

Hallo "OX"
Welcome to the Forum
You have started with a Tank that almost everyone here is familier with so any problems you might come across we should be able to help solve,
There is a massive range of upgrades available for the Tiger 1, Many Taigen and Torro parts will be a straight fit but if in doubt please ask,
The Gearbox mounting plate on the Heng Long is different from the Torro and Taigen so the gearboxes are not a an easy swap for instance and the electrics are different,
I should add that Taigen do sell gearboxes specifically for Heng Long Tanks and if you go to ----
http://www.welshdragonmodels.co.uk
and click on Heng Long Gearboxes then click on New generation gearboxes you will get an idea of what Taigen offer to Heng long tank owners.
But aftermarket control boards such as the IBU2 and the CLARK TK22 are fine with both,
I hope you enjoy this place,
There are plenty of your countrymen here so you wont be alone.
Shaun.

Thanks for the warm welcome, everyone. I have already spotted the RC airplane forum and have even made a post there. The price point of the HL Tiger I made it an easy entry-level tank. It came with zinc alloy tracks and gearbox. I'm already upgrading the gears to steel (because I've already rounded off the teeth on one of the gears(. When I can get around to it, I want to do some detailing, but probably won't get heavy into mods, at least not right away. I'm still in the mode of seeing what's out there.

Question: Is there a way to be notified if there's been new posts in a particular thread? Or do you just have to scan Active Threads?
