Discussion about P1000 Ratte Tank

Post by seekaliao »

Too bad the idea was scrapped.

But I am just thinking whats the big deal about this tank? I read stories like waste of resources, impractical etc...OK, I agree that it may not be really practical. But, its not really taking up much resources. Considering the fact that German destroyers during WW2 are already well over 2000 tons. Bismark alone is already over 40000 tons. So, 1000 tons don't seems much at all. Its around 35m, far smaller than any destroyers out there.

Too bad war conditions didn't allow them to build. Imagine 10 of these bad body rolling across the battlefield, I think the allies would shit bricks!! Imagine you are inside a sherman (assuming the mighty firefly), they you saw this, I wonder if you are going to run or shoot at it.

Fair call mate, until it came to a body of water it could not ford..........oh, like a river(last check there was loads of them in Europe!)
Remember, the Yamato (the biggest man made creation of war to that point)was destroyed by the same force of arms that eventually really won the war for the Allies......Air Power......

The Ratte was a fantastic exercise in engineering theory, but simply would not have survived long enough to make any difference.
The Jagdtiger was by far the best "landship" weapon, but was so unreliable and vulnerable to Airpower that it too made no difference.....

Swarms of Me 262's with FW 190's and the like, over a fleet of StuGs & Jagdpanthers, with E-75's as the tip of the spear could easily have done the same thing.

Indeed Mr B.
There was one Stuka ace called Hans Ulrich Rudel - 520 tank kills on the Eastern front, he survived through the war and was injured badly at least once...
