Thoughts on a ball bearing turret mount

The design I have in mind is a lower race with a groove for the balls which will attach to the hull, a ball cage for the balls to sit in, and an upper race with a corresponding groove for the balls, which will attach to the turret with the turret drive rack acting to hold the upper and lower races together by means of screws into the turret. It will all make sense when I put it into openscad (I hope!)

Hmmm.. having had screaming fits in the past with ball bearings on cars and bikes (push types, as well as BMW and Honda!), I can imagine how you would somehow need to preassemble the balls in their races (and 'lock' them in there somehow) before mounting the ring on the Turret...otherwise they could spill out. I always thought that taper rollers were a superior technology (Timken taper rollers on my old Cooper 'S' wheel bearings for example, were a joy to fit....with no balls popping out for want of adhesive grease...with older Minis ....and no, that's not a 'Carry On' style double entendre... )

Yup i have a cunning plan - all will be revealed once i get my hands back on my trusty pc and openscad.

Hi Mick, yes all thoughts and suggestions are valid and much appreciated, i had factored in the vertical load but forgot the horizontal load, so .... cunning plan 2, i think there is a way.... I'll have to do some work in openscad but I still think this is doable.

I have a few HL tanks and yes, the rings are different sizes.

If you want a slick turret rotation, you could try the tip that Bogeyman gave me. Trot down to the local stationery store and buy some plastic document holders, the slippery clear plastic ones. Cut two turret rings out, glue one to the turret and one to the hull. voila! friction free turret rotation.
