If you ask a guy who is flying some serious aircraft if they'd use a a radio from Hobby King, they'd laugh in you face. Don't get me wrong, a cheap Tx is fine for tanks, etc, but if you're flying gliders that are a mile away or fuel helis or large scale planes that would have serious consequences if they lost signal, the Tx/Rx has to be bulletproof.
I use Dx6is with the cheap orange box receivers, but my tanks or boats won't hurt anyone if they brown out.
Well, there are cheap mods that you can do to cheap radios. I installed a multiprotocol module in my radio for about 30 bucks and now I have 24 channels and I can use it with hobbyking receivers, frsky (which are even better than the spectrum) the original spectrum and many many more.
In my opinion spectrum is way overpriced.
