Yes train engineer for Norfolk Southern railroad.

Just waiting for my license to arrive in the mail now. Crazy amount of work you guys have NO idea! All the rules are rediculous that we have to follow! Not just speeds but knowing every grade. The amount of powered axles I can have in use, the weight of the train vs the grades and powered axles. Then it's different for different trains, so is reversing. It's nuts!

Engine driver? That sounds funny. :haha: As I'm sure engineer does to you guys. It's crazy to think how different the English language can actually be depending upon where in the world you speak it.

In the UK in the days of Steam,
A boy with ambition would start as an Engine Cleaner, I hardly need to describe what that means, but it was the best way of learning about every Nut, Bolt, Rivet and valve on the Engine and Tender.
Then promotion to Fireman and after years of watching the main man on the footplate and examinations both written and practical "Engine Driver" and you really were the main man in the railway industry,
With that appointment.
You were no longer Bob or Joe or Sid you were now Mister.

Thanks! They mostly run on diesel these days. ;) You'd be surprised how many people think trains are a thing of the past. I just think it's cool that almost everything we own at one point or another was on a train.

Mick Bulk freight still travels by rail, but in an age when everything is wanted yesterday the railway cannot compete,
Its a combination of Turnover, accountability, and cost. If 900 tonnes of bagged cement has to go from Birmingham to Glasgow then Rail freight is the obvious answer, but if 18 tonnes of boxed small electrical appliances for twenty different stores in North West England have to be on the shelves by Tuesday then it has to go by Truck.
That way the driver can account for shortages and damage if any and prove the delivery was on time with his signed delivery notes,
And because the only people involved in the delivery can be easily identified,(A fork lift driver and the truck driver) Any insurance claim for loss or damage can be directed to the correct party,
Whereas there are far too many people involved in Rail Freight to make such a search for the guilty party worth while and you cannot send a train anywhere until sufficient freight has been loaded to make the run financially viable so your 18 tonnes of boxed small electrical appliances could be sitting in a warehouse for days waiting for a train to be complete before being loaded and rolling.
