I fancy a new tank to tinker with...

Post by vyvsdad »

Hello everyone,

As the header says I fancy a new tank to tinker with, and would appreciate your help and opinions regarding the best place to buy.
I'm looking at spending no more than £200, and I prefer a modern tank so have narrowed it down to either a Leopard2a6 or a Challenger, leaning towards the leopard for no reason other than aesthetics.

I have been looking at and comparing Tankzone and Haya and the options the two offer is i find quite bewildering, especially from Haya. For example, see the link below.

http://www.hayaltd.co.uk/Heng_long_Leop ... 90013.aspx

Now, its been a while since I brought one, but it clearly states that it has two speeds. Does this mean a two speed gearbox or just slightly rubbish proportionate control?
And on the link below hop up on the gun. Really?

http://www.hayaltd.co.uk/Heng_long_Germ ... 64317.aspx

On the tank zone website my eye was drawn to the all metal lower hull on the leopard, but wander how much of a benefit this is. Again, opinions would be most appreciated.

I'm not so bothered about metal gearboxes, as its not usually long before I rip them out and put in gearboxes of my own design, but metal tracks and wheels would be nice, but I'm perfectly happy to upgrade as I go.
Sounds I'm not interested in as I like my tanks to be as silent as possible (hence the new gear boxes), see my previous question for the reason why.

Also, and I'm sorry to bombard you all with questions, I just assume these days that all tanks come with proportionate control. Am I right in thinking this?

Many thanks in advance

Dan

Hi, I am probably the worse person on this Forum to talk to about "TANKZONE" Apparently he is a good dealer NOW,
All I know is he has owed me over £400 for some years now and I would avoid him BUT like I say some people reckon he is ok.
"Haya" is a reputable and trustworthy dealer but not the cheapest,
If you want a cheap 2.4 1/16 R/C Tank then I would recommend "HOWES" of Kidlington, I have no idea if they are selling Challengers but they usually have Tiger1s and 2s in stock,
Shaun.
I think I am about to upset someone :haha:

Hi Dan and welcome aboard. Where are you located? That makes a big difference for what guys recommend when it comes to stuff like shipping. It doesn't sound like you're in the u.s., which is too bad because I've been looking for someone that wants to take on an Abrams project.
When FDR coined the phrase "The Arsenal of Democracy", he was talking about Detroit. Proud to live in the 2nd most violent city in America!!

Not forgetting Forgebear. http://www.forgebeartanks.com/store/c1/ ... ducts.html I've ordered whole tanks, if he's not got it he can usually order it in.

I've bought my Clark boards from Tankzone and their service has been impeccable so far as I am concerned. I do believe that they are not the most competitive so far as tank prices are concerned.
