Hello All!

Post by skip2a »

Hello:

I am just starting out in the hobby with my son. I am 53 and he is 12: there is a huge learning curve, lol. I have no clue what I am doing and have been luck enough to make friends with some members on this forum and RCU. They are walking me through the process and helping me learn as I go.

We live in central Pennsylvania and have very few options as far as suppliers or stores that carry 1/16 tanks. I am disappointed that there aren't more vendors in the US: from what I see shipping from the UK and Europe really jacks up the prices on parts.

We participated in an IR battle weekend at the AAF Museum in Danville, Va a month ago. It was almost a 7 hour drive for us but we are definitely hooked!

We are also scratch building a 1/6 Jagdtiger to participate in paintball battles. A neighbor belongs to a group that battles once or twice a year in Gettysburg and he has been a great help. It is totally different than the 1/16 tanks but is still a lot of fun.

My son has a Tiagen Tiger 1 (late war) with an airsoft unit that I bought him for his birthday, he loves it. Unfortunately the airsoft unit is terrible and not working already.

I bought a used Tiagen Tiger 1 (early war) from a fellow on RCU and got to run it in some IR battles. It needs a better board, the IR transmitter bulb adjusted, a new traverse unit (gear stripped in first battle) and a better transmitter. It is a solid metal beast and a lot of fun. That will become my sons IR tank.

Last night I just purchased a Tiagen PzIV from a forum member and I am looking forward to doing some work on it. It is coming with a lot of upgraded metal parts that need installed and it will also need a new board for IR battles and a transmitter. I am hoping to find some good reference pictures to do a DAK vehicle.

I want to build a Tamiya kit with my son over winter but I haven't found a kit that has enough "wow" factor to get me to spend the money on it yet. Maybe if I start understanding a little more about the inner workings of these vehicles I will feel comfortable to buy another kit and try to convert it.

See ya,

Just go to EBay Rc military vehicles and limit your search to north America. There are a few good places to get some items in 1/16th scale. Check the vender forum to see those who people have had bad experiences with before ordering anything.

Hey Skip,

Gary here. It's good to see you found your way here. You'll find this forum to a bit different from RCU, in all the right ways. The wealth of knowledge available from these guys will amaze you, and it would take days to tell you about all the stuff I've learned here. I wish I had known you stripped a rotation unit, I could have sent one along with the package, which will arrive tomorrow, they tell me.

This is a long thread, but Philip really knows his stuff and I think his DAK will be just what you're looking for.

You should get tons of ideas from this and if Philip takes a likin' to ya then you couldn't have a better Guru.

One thing about most RC Tankers, we love to talk about our projects. 8)

Thank you for the welcome.

I will try to get some decent pictures of what we have this weekend if possible. Can't wait for my PzIV to get here this weekend.

Gary: I have been lurking here for a few weeks: lots of good info to read and everyone seems really helpful. I had found and bookmarked the DAK PzIV thread already. The third picture of his post is one that I have been looking at for awhile as far as a guide for my DAK vehicle. There are a lot of IV build threads on here. Being an IR battler I won't go crazy with details but there are some things that I want to do to make it nicer. I found out the hard way at Danville that even a big, fat, heavy all metal Tiger can flip over under the right circumstances; that's hard on accessories, lol.

I never though to ask you about the traverse gearbox; the nylon gear that engages the turret ring has a few teeth missing and it won't go past that spot. I would like on with metal gears but they want over $40 for them from Hong Kong. I will just buy a few of the $7 Imex ones for the tool box. The all metal turret on the tiger is overkill and may be the issue?

Have a great weekend!

Hi Skip, welcome aboard! :-)

I am also new to 1:16 RC having spent the majority of my time in static 1:18. And now you have me REALLY curious about 1:6th paintball panzers.. I had no idea there was such a thing and the idea of my tank nailing or being nailed by the actual thunk/splat of a paintball has my adrenaline pumping. Off to youtube to take a look now. :-)

OnTrack:

Check out: http://www.rctankcombat.com/ The site isn't organized well but there are videos. If you go to the "tanks" link it will take you to a build page on all of the tanks. Some are short others are very detailed.

It is fun. I'm stuck on my suspension for the Jagdtiger; I'm just not sure how to make it. Trying 3/4 tube and springs for the first attempt.

Skip, you'll find the tool box grows quickly. I find myself picking up an airsoft unit or smoker or two every time I place an order. Some things are just good to have "in stock" in this hobby, especially with airsoft.

I'll bet one of the guys here can help you sort out that servo recoil in the P4. What about it, guys? Anybody done more than one servo recoil in an IR P3 or P4?
