Tank Rides

Hi Guys,

check out Duxford diary of events for May 4th- 5th- and I think 24th-25th.

Tank rides for a fiver and tank displays. I am told they have quite a large tank museum but I can't confirm that as I have never seen it.

For those who have never been to Duxford, it is on the M11 just north of Stanstead airport. They house the Battle of Britain flight and have a wonderful flight museum and are part of the Imperial War Museum. The Flight displays are really amazing and something you will never forget as you get quite close to the standing areas.

Perhaps this may be an oportunity for some of us to meet and have that pint......

The Duxford crew are the ones doing the Centurion restoration on the latest series of "Tank Overhaul".

I've been there twice. First time to see planes and only discovered the armour at the end having spent the majority of a day looking at planes.
Second time (after discovering HL tanks) I started at the far armour end and worked back towards the planes.

The armour section is quite large. Obviously nowhere near the size of Bovington, but for that it has a larger variety as it is not limited to just tanks.

They have a Schwimmwagen there which I want to steal sometime......

For those who have never been to Duxford, it is on the M11 just north of Stanstead airport.

Its just south of Cambridge, probably about half an hour north of Stanstead.
They house the Fighter Collection, Old Flying Machine company, Aircraft Restoration Company (Bristol Bleinhem), Historic Flying Limited, Plane Sailing (PBY Catalina owners), the Sally B - 1 of 2 airworth B17's in Europe - and several other warbird operators. A good website to keep upto date with the museum can be found here: http://www.duxford-update.info/ If you are into Warbirds, this is the place to visit in the UK, and probably only second in the world after the hallowed Planes of Fame museum at Chino, in southern California.

The Battle of Britain flight are located at RAF Conningsby in South Lincolnshire - open to the public at certain times I believe...

i went last year, they have a good collection or armour, and the american warbird hanger is worth a look on its own, plus they have a comet as a gate gardian  ::)

hi guys. i went there last august and i have attached a few pics the wife took. bit ropey (the pics, not the wife), but you can see a couple of the exhibits reasonably well in the gloom!!

I never thought that my little note would cause such a lot of interesting replies to be posted...... thanks for correcting my info, it is best to have the rite information then I dont get found hanging from a lampost like a famous Italian dicktator eh?

I went to Duxford in 1996 ( I think) and saw the most amazing air display..... there were all sorts of war planes from all over the world, and the biggest "wing" of Spitfires flying together since the war. This was a celebration display with just about every allied warbird that could fly...I think it was 50 year aniversary of VE day.

Perhaps we could use this as an excuse for a meeting for South Eastern folks...I can't even get a responce from anyone down here to meet in a pub ....what are my chances here.....any bets????
