Weld seams ?

Post by Model Builder 4 »

Afternoon all, was wondering what you guys use for the simulated weld seams ? I use green stuff putty and milliput but i find that they are difficult to use for this application :shifty: the green stuff is very sticky and sticks to everything besides what you want it to :-< and the milliput crumbles if you try and make it too thin which is exactly what I need it to do, so just wondering what your guys preferred materials and methods for doing this are

Cheers, Lee.

After reading this forum, I followed the Apoxie sculpt advise. It is not that sticky, but when in place, it wants to stay. You can form it with wet tools or by hand for several hours and u can sand it. Also styrene rods softened with plastic glue seam - seam you got it ;)- to work . Watch panzermeister 36 at YouTube for an example.

I use "Testors Contour Putty" & just run a bead like you'd run a bead of weld. Its got a bad rep as a workable putty but it makes good "slightly messy" weld beads. See the sheet metal between the hull & the track guard at the rear.
I accentuated it a little with slightly non-matching paint as well. Kinda of sloppy like a field repair & paint brush might look.

Thanks for the replies fella's  some good tips and ideas, I'm not going to go too mad with the weld seams just make some a little more prominent in the more noticeable areas,

I use a jewelers screwdriver held insite a wine cork, and a butane burner to melt the weld texture on all my tanks.
Some areas though I do use a filler and texture it with the same screwdriver kept damp.
Areas I want welds but still need to take the sections apart I use the filler. Cut with a blade I can separate the sections as required and reinstate the weld by the same method.
I use a flexible gap filler used in houshold renovations or repairs.
