3D Hedgerow cutters - need feedback

Post by OnTrack »

I've worked up a set of Hedgerow cutters for the M4 and M5. This is the first set of several versions. I've made them in a way that they can either be glued on or snap on/snap off for easy removal prior to an RC battle. The live photos are home prints on various 1:16 (Heng Long) and 1:18 (Battleground and 21st Century) tanks. When I post them to Shapeways there will be sets in 1:16 for both Heng Long and Tamiya M4's as well as the Battleground M5A1.

What I am seeking:
- Feedback on accuracy of the cutters themselves
- Feedback on tanks to fit them in addition to Heng Long or Tamiya
- Anything else, I just like feedback! :-)

Also, the prototype pics were printed at home in SLA on fast mode so they look really rough. For a better perspective on what they would like at Shapeways you can see some comparison pictures here of various materials and printing styles.

Design looks good, they really beef up the front end of the tank and give it a very aggressive appearance. If you're after additional tanks to fit them to, I think both Cromwells and Churchills had Culin hedgecutter prongs attached during the Normandy campaign.

Yep, and here's a Cromwell with a cutter:

I'm also building a Tamiya 1/35 Cromwell at the moment, as practice for building my Ludwig 1/16 Cromwell later. The Tamiya kit comes with a hedgecutter attachment. A detachable cutter for the grown up 1/16 model, would be quite an individual feature...and therefore quite desirable.

Trivia: The cutters were designed by a soldier who came from a US farm. He was in the Bocage and knew the problems that the Allies were having getting through the undergrowth. They were made using the traps that Rommel had erected on the Normandy Beaches...Rommel had diverted tank making steel to make them by the thousand...and then Hitler wondered why he ran out of tanks?

The designer went back to the front line and was killed in action a very short while later.

Thank you gents. I've given a few to some folks that own the various tanks to try for feedback. As soon as I make any changes they request, I'll have them uploaded to Shapeways.

These are done! Thank you all for the feedback and encouragement. The 1:16 version is a direct fit with no glue for the Heng Long M4. The HL version can be used for Taigen and Tamiya but the modeler will have to attach them since those M4's don't have hooks on the differential covers. :-/

If you do print one in 1:16, make sure you choose the 1:16 Heng Long version from the list. I made different versions to fit a number of 1:18 tanks as well and they are all listed together.

Some photos of the Style I cutters up close and how they attach to the hooks depending on the cover type.
